Formerly, when a word or phrase in quotation marks came at the end of a phrase or clause that ended with a semicolon, the semicolon would be put before the trailing quotation mark ; now, however, the magazine follows the more commonly observed style and puts the semicolon after the second quotation mark.

In English, when a quotation follows other writing on a line of text, a space precedes the opening quotation mark unless the preceding symbol, such as an em dash, requires that there be no space.

When a quotation is followed by other writing on a line of text, a space follows the closing quotation mark unless it is immediately followed by other punctuation within the sentence, such as a colon or closing punctuation.

When a double quotation mark or a single quotation mark immediately follows the other, proper spacing for legibility may suggest that a non-breaking space (& nbsp ;) or thin space (& thinsp ;) be inserted.

William Carey, in a book entitled, ' An Enquiry into the Obligations of Christians to Use Means for the Conversion of the Heathens ' popularised a quotation, where, according to the Bible, during his last days on earth Jesus commanded his eleven disciples ( the apostles ) as follows:

The quotation from von Haller may be translated from the Latin as follows: " Of course, firstly the remedy must be proved on a healthy body, without being mixed with anything foreign ; and when its odour and flavour have been ascertained, a tiny dose of it should be given and attention paid to all the changes of state that take place, what the pulse is, what heat there is, what sort of breathing and what exertions there are.

An approximate version ( apparently quoted from memory ) appears in the " Queries and Answers " column in The New York Times Book Review, July 2, 1950, p. 23, which asks for the author of the quotation ; and a reply in the same column in the issue for August 13, 1950, p. 19, where the quotation is attributed to Niebuhr and an unidentified printed text is quoted as follows:

The word is often used to express that what follows is not an exact quotation but instead gives a general feel for what was said.

The Christian Writer's Manual of Style also states that a citation that follows a block quotation of text may either be in parentheses flush against the text, or right-aligned following an em-dash on a new line.

Abbreviations may be used when the citation is a reference that follows a block quotation of text.

The names included in the category Candidatus are usually written as follows: Candidatus ( in italics ), the subsequent name ( s ) in Roman type ( with an initial capital letter for the genus name ) and the entire name in quotation marks.

The second quotation refers to The Flood and translates as follows: Everything on dry land that had the breath of life in its nostrils died.

We have been using the word `` public '' in quotation marks, that is, in its vernacular connotation with reference to the odd-lot index theory.

Aberdare was the birthplace of the Second World War poet Alun Lewis, and there is a plaque commemorating him, including a quotation from his poem The Mountain over Aberdare.

John Ernest Grabe found an otherwise unreported saying of Jesus, attributed to the Apostle Barnabas, amongst the Greek manuscripts in the Baroccian collection in the Bodleian Library ; which he speculated might be a quotation from this lost gospel ; and John Toland claimed to have identified a corresponding phrase when he examined the surviving Italian manuscript of the Gospel of Barnabas in Amsterdam before 1709.

T. S. Eliot's use of a quotation from Heart of Darkness —" Mistah Kurtz, he dead "— as an epigraph to the original manuscript of his poem The Hollow Men contrasted its dark horror with the presumed " light of civilization ," and suggested the ambiguity of both the dark motives of civilization and the freedom of barbarism, as well as the " spiritual darkness " of several characters in Heart of Darkness.
