HSL 3 continues this route from Liège to the German border near Aachen.

The road's route between Baltimore and Cumberland continues to use the name National Pike or Baltimore National Pike today, with various portions now signed as U. S. Route 40, Alternate U. S. 40, or Maryland 144.

From Moncton, the highway continues southeast for to a junction at Aulac on the New Brunswick – Nova Scotia border ( near Sackville ) where the Trans-Canada Highway splits into the main route continuing to the nearby border with Nova Scotia as Route 2, and a route designated as Route 16 which runs east to the Confederation Bridge at Cape Jourimain.

From the ferry terminal at Caribou, the highway continues south for another as Highway 106 to a junction with the direct Trans-Canada Highway route ( Highway 104 ) at Westville ( near New Glasgow ).

From the New Brunswick border, the main Trans-Canada Highway route continues east into Nova Scotia at Amherst, where it follows the designation of provincial Highway 104.

From North Sydney, a ferry route, operated by the Crown corporation Marine Atlantic, continues the highway to Newfoundland, arriving at Channel – Port aux Basques, whereby the Trans-Canada Highway assumes the designation of Highway 1 and runs northeast for through Corner Brook, east for another through Gander and finally ends at St. John's, another southeast, for a total of 905 km crossing the island.

The route continues through Glendola, and Brighton Avenue ( southbound Interchanges 7A and 7B ),. The freeway continues south of the Shark River Golf Course, through Neptune, paralleling Brighton Avenue, and interchanges with Route 33, and County Route 17 at Exit 8.

The route continues past residential neighborhoods containing some businesses, briefly forming the border between Bridgewater Township to the north and Somerville to the south before fully entering Bridgewater Township.

Past this interchange, the route continues into Bound Brook as a two-lane undivided road with a speed limit and heads through business areas.

A short distance later, at the second intersection with Old South Avenue, the route becomes state-maintained again and continues past businesses, intersecting County Route 655 ( Martine Avenue ) before it heads into residential neighborhoods and meets County Route 601 ( Laurel Place ).

After the intersection with Route 439, the route continues past urban residences and business, narrowing into a two-lane undivided road at the intersection with County Route 618 ( Magie Avenue ).

Part of State Route 238 until 1983, and still considered the same route ( part of Route 238 ) by the California Department of Transportation ( Caltrans ), it connects Interstate 580 in Castro Valley ( where SR 238 continues south ) with Interstate 880 in San Leandro.

The route continues north, paralleling the elevated Northeast Corridor ( former Pennsylvania Railroad ) tracks that lead up to Newark Penn Station.

The road widens to six lanes and the route intersects County Route 510 ( Market Street ) near Newark Penn Station and continues north into downtown Newark, splitting from the Northeast Corridor rail line.

The route continues into wooded residential areas, crossing into Holmdel Township, where it crosses County Route 520 ( Newman Springs Road / Main Street ).

The route intersects County Route 689 ( Amboy Avenue / Morristown Road ), where it turns to the west and continues through areas of residences and businesses, with the speed limit dropping to at the County Route 687 ( Cottrell Road ) intersection.

From there, Route 35 heads north and intersects Route 138, an extension of Interstate 195, continuing north through Monmouth County before crossing the Victory Bridge over the Raritan River into Perth Amboy, where the route continues north to Rahway.

Past the Route 37 interchange, Route 35 continues north along Barnegat Bay, curving eastward and crossing into Toms River Township, where the route splits into a block-wide one-way pair with two lanes in each direction that heads north through residential and commercial Ortley Beach.

Route 35 continues north through Bay Head, becoming Main Avenue, then enters Point Pleasant Beach, a beach resort with a boardwalk that is home to Jenkinson's Aquarium, where the route swings to the west and turns north onto another one-way pair with two lanes in each direction — the northbound direction following Cincinnati Avenue and the southbound direction following Richmond Avenue.

The route continues northwest through residential and commercial areas of Neptune City as a four-lane, undivided highway before heading north as a two-lane, undivided road called Morris Avenue.

The route started at St. Joseph, Missouri on the Missouri River, it then followed what is modern day US 36 — the Pony Express Highway — to Marysville, Kansas, where it turned northwest following Little Blue River to Fort Kearny in Nebraska.

From 2, 500 m above sea level on Changbai Mountain, on the China-North Korea border, the river flows south to Hyesan before sweeping 130 km northwest to Linjiang and then returning to a more southerly route for a further 300 km to empty into the Korea Bay between Dandong ( China ) and Sinŭiju ( North Korea ).

North of Jacksonville, U. S. 1 turns northwest in order to reach the Fall Line at Augusta, Georgia ; US 17 becomes the coastal route into Virginia, where US 13 takes over.

The route passes through urban residential and industrial areas, with the Raritan Valley Line located a short distance to the northwest.

At the crossing of an abandoned railroad line that is now the Henry Hudson Trail, the route entirely enters Matawan, continuing northwest through business areas as a four-lane road named Middlesex Street.

The route leaves Gratiot and goes northwest through Richmond and then north through Memphis.

The route comes to an interchange with the southern terminus of County Route 503 ( Washington Avenue ) and Paterson Plank Road, where Route 120 becomes a four-lane divided surface road that merges with Paterson Plank Road as it heads northwest along the border of Carlstadt to the northeast and East Rutherford to the southwest.

The route narrows to a two-lane, undivided road and heads northwest into the New Jersey Meadowlands, passing under the mainline of the New Jersey Turnpike ( Interstate 95 ) and the western spur of the New Jersey Turnpike a short distance later.

The route runs from County Route 506 ( Bloomfield Avenue ) and County Route 577 ( Prospect Avenue ) in Verona, Essex County northwest to the border with New York at Montague Township in Sussex County, where the road continues to Port Jervis, New York as Orange County Route 15.

Past the freeway portion, the route heads northwest along the border of Morris and Passaic Counties as a four-to six-lane divided highway with a wide median at places, winding through mountainous areas and crossing Interstate 287 in Riverdale.

The route continues northwest through Sussex County as a mostly two-lane, undivided road that passes through farmland and woodland as well as the communities of Franklin, Hamburg, and Sussex before reaching the New York border just south of an interchange with Interstate 84 near High Point State Park.

Others disembarked at nearby Dyea, northwest of Skagway, and crossed northward on the Chilkoot Pass, an existing Tlingit trade route to reach the lakes.

Mountainburg lies along U. S. Route 71, and thrived when this road was the main route in northwest Arkansas.

The route passes to the east of WheatonArts and the Creative Glass Center of America before turning northwest and crossing into Vineland, where it interchanges with CR 555.

" The route ascends to Banner Creek Summit at and later enters the Sawtooth National Recreation Area about twelve miles ( 20 km ) northwest of Stanley.

A CSX railroad passes from northwest to southeast through the middle of the town on its route between Paris and Terre Haute, Indiana.

K-18, an east-west route, approaches Paradise from the northwest, then turns east north of the city.

K-96, an east-west route, enters the city from the northwest, runs concurrently with I-235 through north-central Wichita, turns south for approximately a mile, running concurrently with I-135 before splitting off to the east and traveling around northeast Wichita, ultimately terminating at an interchange with U. S. 54 / U. S. 400 in the eastern part of the city.

For approximately the last half-mile the route is in New Salem, it is concurrent with Massachusetts Route 122, which enters New Salem through Petersham, heading northwest towards Route 202 before both enter Orange and split shortly thereafter.

That all changed in the summer of 1899 when the Burlington Railway surveyed a new route extending northwest from Worthington.
