References in the same parabasis to a play by Eupolis called Maricas ( produced in 421 ) and criticism of the populist politician Hyperbolus ( ostracized in 416 ) indicate that the second version of The Clouds was probably composed somewhere between 421-16 BC.

However the second parabasis ( 1113 – 30 ) is in a shortened form, comprising an epirrhema in trochaic tetrameter but without the songs and the antepirrhema needed for a conventional, symmetrical scene.

The Knights exemplifies these conventions but it also provides a thematic link between the first and second parabasis.

The second parabasis ( lines 1264-1315 ) features a description of ships that talk and act like good women.

However, it has been suggested, on the basis of ancient commentaries, that the second parabasis was actually written by Eupolis, another comic poet.

In this play, the first parabasis ( 678-800 ) and the second ( 1058 – 1117 ) are conventional in structure but the Chorus always speaks in character as birds.

The anonymous Life states that this advice was the basis of Aristophanes ’ receipt of the olive wreath, and the author of the ancient Hypothesis says admiration of the parabasis was the major factor that led to the play's second production.

However, the second parabasis ( lines 971-99 ) is unusual.

There is then a second parabasis ( see Note at end of this section ), in which the Chorus touches briefly on a conflict between Cleon and the author, after which a household slave arrives with news for the audience about the old man's appalling behaviour at the dinner party: Philocleon has got himself abusively drunk, he has insulted all his son's fashionable friends and now he is assaulting anyone he meets on the way home.

Note: Some editors ( such as Barrett ) exchange the second parabasis ( lines 1265 – 91 ) with the song ( lines 1450 – 73 ) in which Bdelycleon is commended for filial devotion.

In Thesmophoria however the Chorus never speaks out of character, the first parabasis is shortened and there is no second parabasis.

For example, in the play The Wasps by Aristophanes the first parabasis is about Aristophanes ' career as a playwright to date, while the second parabasis is shorter, and contains a string of in-jokes about local characters who would be well known to the ancient Athenian audience ( e. g. the politician Cleon ).

The following season, 1996 / 97, Wasps won their second league championship, and became the first English Champions of the professional era.
