The entrance to the church is through a single door in the south transept.

Returning to Italy, the most celebrated doors are those of the Battistero di San Giovanni ( Florence ), which together with the door frames are all in bronze, the borders of the latter being perhaps the most remarkable: the modeling of the figures, birds and foliage of the south doorway, by Andrea Pisano ( 1330 ), and of the east doorway by Ghiberti ( 1425 – 1452 ), are of great beauty ; in the north door ( 1402 – 1424 ) Ghiberti adopted the same scheme of design for the paneling and figure subjects in them as Andrea Pisano, but in the east door the rectangular panels are all filled, with bas-reliefs, in which Scripture subjects are illustrated with innumerable figures, these being probably the gates of Paradise of which Michelangelo speaks.

Children going door to door " guising " ( or " Galoshin " on the south bank of the lower Clyde ) in costumes and masks, carrying turnip lanterns, offering entertainment of various sorts in return for food or coins, was traditional in the 19th century and continued well into the 20th century.

The transept was immediately closed, in case the window were to collapse, while scaffolding was erected, and the area immediately in front of the inside of the window was closed off and covered, to maintain access via the south door beneath it.

His body was escorted south by a company of mercenaries and he was buried in Worcester Cathedral in front of the altar of St Wulfstan.

The Borough runs further to the south than realised ; both St George's Cathedral and the Imperial War Museum are within the ancient boundaries, which border nearby Lambeth.

To the south of this region is where the neo-Gothic City Hall ( 1889 ) is to be found, as well as the Victoria Law Courts ( 1887 ), the Parliament Building ( 1829 – 1834 ), the large Stabroek Market ( 1792 ) containing the prominent cast-iron clock tower that dominates the city sky line, the Roman Catholic Brickdam Cathedral, City Engineer House, the Magistrate's Court, St. Andrew's Kirk ( 1818 ) and Independence Arch.

In the 19th century it was assumed ( as with so many buildings of medieval Paris ) to be the work of the master mason Pierre de Montreuil, who worked on the remodelling of the Royal Abbey of Saint-Denis and completed the south transept façade of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris.

Amiens Cathedral is notable for the coherence of its plan, the beauty of its three-tier interior elevation, the particularly fine display of sculptures on the principal façade and in the south transept, and the labyrinth, and other inlays of its floor.

There is some archaeological evidence of Neolithic settlement at the Cathedral Hill site which otherwise appears to have been unoccupied until the late Bronze Age when there was an undefended settlement at least on the south west of the hill top.

The town's name derives from " Cathedral Canyon " to the south of the town, so named in 1850 by Colonel Henry Washington because its rock formations were reminiscent of a cathedral.

Following this, and some debate about a new university at St. Patrick's Cathedral, in 1592 a small group of Dublin citizens obtained a charter by way of letters patent from Queen Elizabeth incorporating Trinity College at the former site of All Hallows monastery, to the south east of the city walls, provided by the Corporation of Dublin.

Traces of Neolithic settlement have been discovered on the south side of the sandstone ridge occupied by the Cathedral.

The two streams have been dammed south of the Cathedral on Dam Street to form Minster Pool and near St Chad's Road to form Stowe Pool.

This parish extended from Turnmill Street in the north to St Paul's Cathedral and Ludgate Hill in the south, along the banks of the Fleet ( now the course of Farringdon Street ).

Other spires of this sort include the south spire of Chartres Cathedral, and the spires of Norwich Cathedral, Chichester Cathedral and Oxford Cathedral.
