The Skálholt Map, drawn in 1570 or 1590 but surviving only through later copies, shows Promontorium Winlandiae (" promontory / cape / foreland of Vinland ") as a narrow cape with its northern tip at the same latitude as southern Ireland.

The north point is called " the north cape ", and the southern tip marks the end of the " Hankøsund ".

There are two small islands, known as Kau Pei Chau ( 狗髀洲 ), in the southern vicinity of the cape.

The Li ( 黎 ; pinyin: Lí ) or Hlai are a minority ethnic group, the vast majority of whom live off the southern coast of mainland China on Hainan Island, where they are the largest minority ethnic group.

They speak their own Hlai language, a member of the Tai – Kadai language family, but most can understand or speak Hainanese and Mandarin — and it is also common for Li people to learn and speak Cantonese because many Li in Hainan relocate to Cantonese-speaking areas in southern mainland China near Hainan such as Guangzhou and Hong Kong.

Chinatowns in Asia are widespread with a large concentration of overseas Chinese in East Asia and Southeast Asia and ethnic Chinese whose ancestors came from southern China – particularly the provinces of Guangdong, Fujian, and Hainan – and settled in countries such as Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam centuries ago — starting as early as the Tang Dynasty, but mostly notably in the 17th through the 19th centuries ( during the reign of the Qing Dynasty ), and well into the 20th century.

The Miao live mainly in southern China, in the provinces of Guizhou, Hunan, Yunnan, Sichuan, Guangxi, Hainan, Guangdong, Hubei, and elsewhere in China.

Wild trees still grow in parts of southern China and on Hainan Island.

Among them are several thousand Utsuls in southern Hainan province, who speak an Austronesian language ( Tsat ) related to that of the Cham Muslim minority of Vietnam, and who are said to be descended from Chams who migrated to Hainan.

Although it comprises some two hundred islands scattered among three archipelagos off the southern coast, ( 97 %) of its land mass is Hainan Island, from which the province takes its name.

Most of them arrived in Hainan Island from the southern provinces of Guangdong, Fujian and Guangxi.

Mǐn or Miin (; BUC: ) is the name of a broad group of Chinese languages spoken by 60 million people in the southeastern Chinese province of Fujian as well as by migrants from this province in Guangdong ( around Chaozhou-Swatou, or Chaoshan area, and the Leizhou peninsula ), Hainan, three counties in southern Zhejiang, and Zhoushan archipelago off Ningbo, and some towns in Liyang and Jiangyin city in Jiangsu province, and Taiwan.

The Southern Min languages, or Min Nan (), are a family of Chinese languages spoken in Taiwan and in parts of Mainland China such as southern Fujian, eastern Guangdong, Hainan, and southern Zhejiang.

The Tai () ethnicity refers collectively to the ethnic groups of southern China and Southeast Asia, stretching from Hainan to eastern India and from southern Sichuan to Laos, Thailand, and parts of Vietnam, which speak languages in the Tai-Kadai language family, and share similar traditions and festivals, such as Songkran.

In southern China, people speaking Kam – Tai ( Zhuang – Dong ) languages are mainly found in Guangxi, Guizhou, Yunnan, Hunan, Guangdong, and Hainan.

Min Nan is a south-eastern Chinese language used in southern parts of Fujian province, the southeastern part of Guangdong province as well as the Hainan province and Taiwan.

In East Asia, the influence of the Siberian anticyclone depresses winter temperatures, pushing the southern boundary of this regime to around China's Hainan Island, at latitude 20 ° N. In Europe and Middle East some small areas directly on or near inland of the Mediterranean, Black and Caspian Sea coastlines fall in this climate, provided they have higher summer precipitation.

After the start of the Second Sino-Japanese War, Kondō commanded the IJN 5th Fleet in the Hainan Island Operation and Swatow Operation off of southern China.

Pinus fenzeliana commonly known as the Hainan white pine or Fenzel's pine, is a tree endemic to the island of Hainan off southern China.

It is located in the southern Mozambique Channel, about half-way between Madagascar ( which is to the east ) and Mozambique, and northwest of Europa Island.

It is the most southern island, named Takarajima, which translates literally as " Treasure Island ".

The Late Period extended from three thousand years ago until first contact with European settlers and was dominated by the organization of First Nations peoples into the Algonquian-influenced Abenaki Nation which existed largely in present-day interior Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine, and the Mi ' kmaq Nation which inhabited all of Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, eastern New Brunswick and the southern Gaspé.

The Maritimes also have a black population who are mostly descendants of African American loyalists or refugees from the War of 1812, largely concentrated in Nova Scotia but also in various communities throughout southern New Brunswick, Cape Breton ( where the black population is largely of West Indian descent ), and Prince Edward Island.

In 1784, the two provinces were divided ; Nova Scotia was split into Nova Scotia, Cape Breton Island ( rejoined to Nova Scotia in 1820 ), Prince Edward Island, and New Brunswick, while Quebec was split into Lower Canada ( southern Quebec ) and Upper Canada ( southern through lower northern Ontario ).

In May 1792, Vancouver was anchored near the southern end of Whidbey Island.

The Yupik are indigenous or aboriginal peoples who live along the coast of western Alaska, especially on the Yukon-Kuskokwim delta and along the Kuskokwim River ( Central Alaskan Yup ' ik ), in southern Alaska ( the Alutiiq ) and along the eastern coast of Chukotka in the Russian Far East and St. Lawrence Island in western Alaska ( the Siberian Yupik ).

The Alutiiq language is relatively close to that spoken by the Yupik in the Bethel, Alaska area, but is considered a distinct language with two major dialects: the Koniag dialect, spoken on the Alaska Peninsula and on Kodiak Island, and the Chugach dialect, is spoken on the southern Kenai Peninsula and in Prince William Sound.

Yup ' ik, with an apostrophe, denotes the speakers of the Central Alaskan Yup ' ik language, who live in western Alaska and southwestern Alaska from southern Norton Sound to the north side of Bristol Bay, on the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, and on Nelson Island.

The northern coast faces the Ligurian Sea ; the eastern coast the Piombino Channel ; the southern coast the Tyrrhenian Sea ; while the Corsica channel divides the western tip of the Island from neighbouring Corsica.

Later the 17th century Icelandic bishop Guðbrandur Thorlaksson, also used the name Ginnungegap to refer to a narrow body of water, possibly the Davis Strait, separating the southern tip of Greenland from Estotelandia, pars America extrema, probably Baffin Island.

The main feeding habitat of the western Pacific subpopulation is the shallow ( 5 – 15 m depth ) shelf off northeastern Sakhalin Island, particularly off the southern portion of Piltun Lagoon, where the main prey species appear to be amphipods and isopods.

The Little Penguin breeds along the entire coastline of New Zealand, the Chatham Islands, and southern Australia ( including roughly 20, 000 pairs on Babel Island ).
