From the Nazi espionage thrillers of the 1940s to the 007 films of the ' 60s and to the high-tech blockbusters of today, the spy film has always been popular with audiences worldwide.

Offering a combination of exciting escapism, technological thrills, and exotic locales, the spy film combines the action and science fiction genres, presenting clearly-delineated heroes for audiences to root for and villains for them to hiss.

The spy film genre began in the silent era, with the paranoia of invasion literature and the onset of the Great War.

In 1928, Fritz Lang made the film Spies which contained many tropes that became popular in later spy dramas, including secret headquarters, an agent known by a number, and the beautiful foreign agent who comes to love the hero.

Alfred Hitchcock did much to popularise the spy film in the 1930s with his influential thrillers The Man Who Knew Too Much ( 1934 ), The 39 Steps ( 1935 ), Sabotage ( 1937 ) and The Lady Vanishes ( 1938 ).

The peak of popularity of the spy film is often considered to be the 1960s when Cold War fears meshed with a desire by audiences to see exciting and suspenseful films.

Eastwood's next film The Eiger Sanction ( 1975 ) was based on Trevanian's critically acclaimed spy novel of the same name.

The genre is closely linked with the thriller and adventure film genres, and it may sometimes have elements of spy fiction and espionage.

Not all spy films fall in the action genre, only those showcasing heavy action such as frequent shootouts and car chases fall in action, spy films with lesser action would be in the thriller genre ( see the spy entry in the subgenres of thriller film ).

In the summer of 1968, Tate began her next film, The Wrecking Crew ( 1969 ), a comedy in which she played Freya Carlson, an accident-prone spy, who was also a romantic interest for star Dean Martin, playing Matt Helm.

The genre was not all about clashing civilizations ; Water on the Brain ( 1933 ) by former intelligence officer Compton Mackenzie was the first successful spy novel satire.

In time, US spy novelists achieved a measure of parity in a genre dominated by British writers.

With the proliferation of male protagonists in the spy fiction genre, writers and book packagers also started bringing out spy fiction with a female as the protagonist.

In contemporary digital video games, the player can be a vicarious spy, as in the Metal Gear, especially in the series ' third installment, Metal Gear Solid, unlike the games of the Third-Person Shooter genre, Syphon Filter, and Splinter Cell.

Many novels in the spy fiction genre have been adapted as films, including works by John Buchan, Le Carré, Ian Fleming ( Bond ) and Len Deighton.

Techno-thrillers ( or technothrillers ) are a hybrid genre, drawing subject matter generally from science fiction, thrillers, spy, action and war.

Finally, after another song from Nichols or Bentley, there was a situation comedy sketch worked up from the clichés of a literary or cinematic genre ; for example, later TIFH programmes included a sketch about restoration England, with Charles II, Nell Gwynne and the Puritan keeper of the Privy Purse (" anything TV can do, we can do later "); or a spoof spy story set on an international sleeper from London to Paris ("… as I moved through the train I gazed at a handsome film star, slumbering in his compartment, and a thought struck me — whether you're great or whether you're humble, when you sleep upright you dribble ").

Another common subgenre of thriller is the spy genre which deals with fictional espionage.

The spy film usually fuses the action and science fiction genres, however, some spy films fall safely in the action genre rather than thriller ( e. i. James Bond ), especially those having frequent shootouts, car chases and such ( see the spy entry in the subgenres of action film ).

The Sandbaggers inverts most of the conventions of the spy thriller genre.

Developed at a time when the television western was losing ground to the spy genre, this show was conceived by its creator, Michael Garrison, as " James Bond on horseback.

South of Laurel Grove Cemetery, and below the junction of the Neversink and the Delaware, was the Tri-State Rock, from which Stevie could spy New Jersey and Pennsylvania, as well as New York, simply by spinning around on his heel.

Charles N. Brown, the publisher of Locus, which primarily addresses the science-fiction publishing world, wrote in the July 2006 issue: " Two Charles McCarry hardcover reprints from Overlook ... aren't really SF or fantasy, but they are two of the best spy thrillers ever written and form a secret or alternate history of the 20th century.

Jumping on the spy bandwagon, other writers also started writing about spy fiction featuring female spies as protagonists, such as The Baroness, which has more graphic action and sex, as compared to other novels featuring male protagonists.

After the War, in France, Gaston Leroux published the spy thriller Rouletabille chez Krupp ( 1917 ), in which a detective, Joseph Rouletabille, engages in espionage.

After the successful Russian Revolution ( 1917 ), the quality of spy fiction declined, because the Bolshevik enemy had won the Russian Civil War ( 1917 – 23 ); thus, the inter-war spy story usually concerns combating the Red Menace, which was then perceived as another " clash of civilizations ".

Ambler's Popular Front – period œvre has a left-wing perspective about the personal consequences of " big picture " politics and ideology, which was notable, given spy fiction's usual right-wards tilt in defence of the Establishment attitudes underpinning empire and imperialism.

Ambler's early novels Uncommon Danger ( 1937 ) and Cause for Alarm ( 1938 ), in which NKVD spies help the amateur protagonist survive, are especially remarkable among English-language spy fiction.

There were also some Children's spy novels made in the 21st century about WW2 including Henderson's Boys which was a spin off CHERUB, the same thing but based in the present day.

In 1973, his novel Seventeen Moments of Spring ( 1968 ) was adapted to television as a twelve-part mini-series about the Soviet spy Maksim Isaev operating in wartime Nazi Germany as Max Otto von Stierlitz, charged with preventing a separate peace between Nazi Germany and America which would exclude the USSR.

The decision to hold off for weeks was possibly due to the strategic importance of the PRC's satellite tracking base on Kiribati, which had been used for Shenzhou V and thought to have been used to spy on a U. S. missile range in the Marshall Islands.

Further inspiration came from a Danger Man episode called " Colony Three ", in which Drake infiltrates a spy school in Eastern Europe during the Cold War.

In the book Moon Shot: The Inside Story of America's Race to the Moon, it is claimed that he flew the U-2 spy plane, a U. S. Air Force aircraft which took the pictures of Soviet missiles in Cuba which President Kennedy used on television on October 22, 1962.

On the one hand, the realistic spy novels of Len Deighton and John le Carré were adapted into relatively serious Cold War thrillers which dealt with some of the realities of the espionage world.
