A 2008 Swedish study using a driving simulator and 35 sleep deprived drivers concluded: " The main results showed an increase in sleepiness indicators from start to before hitting the rumble strip, an alerting effect in most parameters after hitting the strip.

A 2005 Quebec study concluded: " Based on the results of the analyses, it was not possible to recommend a type of rumble strip that would provide sufficient warning to drivers who encroach on the shoulder while remaining safe for cyclists who ride over it.

1956 saw the debut of the Bald Iggle, considered by some Abner enthusiasts to be the creative high point of the strip, as well as Mammy's revelatory encounter with the " Square Eyes " Family — Capp ’ s thinly-veiled appeal for racial tolerance.

Instead of using Vermin's tired characters, Abner inventively peopled the strip with hillbillies.

" The article recounted Capp's days working for an unnamed " benefactor " with a miserly, swinish personality, who Capp claimed was a never-ending source of inspiration when it came time to create a new unregenerate villain for his comic strip.

Allen Saunders, the creator of the Mary Worth strip, returned Capp's fire with the introduction of the character " Hal Rapp ," a foul-tempered, ill-mannered, and ( ironically ) inebriated cartoonist, ( Capp was a teetotaler ).

Ironically, this highly irregular policy ( along with the subsequent fame of Frank Frazetta ) has led to the misconception that his strip was " ghosted " by other hands.

Fascinated by Frazetta's abilities, Capp initially gave him a free hand in an extended daily sequence ( about a biker named " Frankie ," a caricature of Frazetta ) to experiment with the basic look of the strip by adding a bit more realism and detail ( particularly to the inking ).

For many years he simultaneously produced the daily strip, a weekly syndicated newspaper column, and a 500-station radio program ...." He ran the Boston Summer Theatre with The Phantom cartoonist Lee Falk, bringing in Hollywood actors such as Mae West, Melvyn Douglas and Claude Rains to star in their live productions.

On November 13, 1977, Capp retired with an apology to his fans for the recently declining quality of the strip, which he said had been the best he could manage due to declining health.

The only additions to the strip since 1950 began appearing in 1993, with the addition of kit suppliers logos in prominent positions.

Watterson opposed the structure publishers imposed on Sunday newspaper cartoons: the standard cartoon starts with a large, wide rectangle featuring the cartoon's logo or a throwaway panel tangential to the main area so that newspapers pressed for space can remove the top third of the cartoon if they wish ; the rest of the strip is presented in a series of rectangles of different widths.

From 1965-1967, TV Century 21, a largely Gerry Anderson oriented colour comic magazine, featured a one page Dalek comic strip where the artist Ron Turner based the Dalek design on that used in the films.

* October 4 – Dick Tracy, the comic strip detective character created by cartoonist Chester Gould, makes his debut appearance in the Detroit Mirror newspaper.

Dick Tracy is a comic strip featuring Dick Tracy, a hard-hitting, fast-shooting and intelligent police detective.

Chief Brandon, Dick Tracy's superior on the police force and a presence in the strip since 1931, voluntarily resigned in shame.

In 1949, on Christmas Day, Dick Tracy and Tess Trueheart finally married, after a rocky courtship lasting the 18-year history of the strip to that date.

Elements of soap opera began to permeate the strip with Dick, Tess, and Junior ( along with the Tracys ' new baby daughter, Bonnie Braids ), at home as a family.

In his book-length examination of the strip, Dick Tracy-The Official Biography, Jay Maeder suggested that Gould's critics were largely unsatisfied by his explanation.

At this time, the standard publication size and space of newspaper comics was sharply reduced ; for example, the Dick Tracy Sunday strip, which had traditionally been a full-page episode containing 12 panels, was cut in size to a half-page format that offered, at most, eight panels — these new restrictions created challenges for all comic artists.

This was named after a short-lived youth group seen in the strip during the late 1940s, led by Junior Tracy, called " Dick Tracy's Crimestoppers.

Chester Gould retired from comics in 1977 ; his last Dick Tracy strip appeared in print on Sunday, December 25 of that year.

Rick Fletcher died in 1983 and was succeeded by editorial cartoonist Dick Locher, who had assisted Gould on the strip in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

Later, Dick Tracy appeared in the comic strip Gasoline Alley.

Their first Dick Tracy strip was published March 14, 2011.
