The town we now call Accrington covers two townships which were established in 1507 following disafforestation ; those of Old Accrington and New Accrington which were merged in 1878 with the incorporation of the borough council.

* Lost Villages-The Lost Villages are ten communities ( Aultsville, Dickinson's Landing, Farran's Point, Maple Grove, Mille Roches, Moulinette, Santa Cruz, Sheek's Island, Wales, Woodlands ) in the Canadian province of Ontario, in the former townships of Cornwall and Osnabruck ( now South Stormont ) near Cornwall, which were permanently submerged by the creation of the St. Lawrence Seaway in 1958.

Economic relations were distinguished by the reducciones ( reductions or townships ) that were established by Jesuit missionaries from the early seventeenth century until the 1760s.

Thus, townships that were established north of the line assumed they were part of Michigan Territory.

The three easternmost townships were added to the county in 1891, after the Sac and Fox lands were opened to non-Indian settlement.

There were six organized townships in 1808: Franklin, Deerfield, Aurora, Hiram, Springfield, and Hudson with new townships organized later, reaching a maximum of 30.

The present-day boundaries of Portage County were established in 1840 following the 1812 creation of Medina County, a slight boundary adjustment in 1827 with Cuyahoga County, and finally the creation of Summit County in 1840, which took 10 townships from Portage County along with 3 townships from Medina County and two from Stark County.

There are 11 villages and cities that were formed from all or parts of the original 20 townships:

Additional townships were laid out as follows: Jackson in 1829 ; Liberty and Marion in December 1830 ; Big Lick, Blanchard and Van Buren in 1831 ; Washington, Union, and Eagle in 1832 ; Cass and Portage in 1833 ; Pleasant in 1835 ; Orange in 1836 ; Madison in 1840, and finally Allen in 1850.

On January 21, 1840, a petition to create Lake County from seven townships in northern Geauga County and Willoughby Township from Cuyahoga County were presented to the Ohio House of Representatives.

In the 1960s, townships that were once exclusively agricultural were quickly transformed into suburban communities.

In 1856, the borders were made symmetrical and two new townships, St. Mary's and Saline, were added.

Bridgewater Township was originally created by Royal charter on April 4, 1749, from portions of the Northern precinct, and was incorporated as one of New Jersey's initial group of 104 townships by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature on February 21, 1798.

Westfield was originally formed as a township on January 27, 1794, from portions of Elizabeth Township, while the area was still part of Essex County, and was incorporated as a one of New Jersey's first 104 townships by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature on February 21, 1798.

Butternuts is generally believed to be named for three butternut ( a. k. a. white walnut ) trees growing from one stump that originally marked the corner of the townships of what is now New Lisbon, Pittsfield and Morris when this entire section of the county was surveyed by Richard Smith before the Revolution.

Fox Chapel was originally part of O ' Hara and Indiana townships.

It originally included Perry and Jefferson townships.

Seven additional townships were created from land that was originally part of Washington Township.

Denton was originally one of the townships of the ancient parish of Manchester in the Salford Hundred of Lancashire.

The region comprises counties that were originally divided into townships after the traditional method of land grants of the original New England and New York settlers.

One of the four original townships in the province, Exeter originally included Newmarket, Newfields, Brentwood, Epping and Fremont.

Historically a part of Lancashire, Leigh was originally the centre of a large ecclesiastical parish covering six vills or townships.

California has abolished its townships, though may general law cities continue to use the word " Town " as part of their name ( e. g. " Town of Atherton " when it is, legally, the City of Atherton ).

In New Hampshire, locations, grants, townships ( which are different from towns ), and purchases are unincorporated portions of a county which are not part of any town and have limited self-government ( if any, as many are uninhabited ).
