The village's grocery and fuel needs are served by a single general store, owned and operated by the local Alaska Native Corporation, Nunapitchuk, Limited.

In the course of a single year, the village's population doubled, to two hundred residents.

The only widespread religious writing that was not produced by clerics were the mystery plays: growing out of simple tableaux re-enactments of a single Biblical scene, each mystery play became its village's expression of the key events in the Bible.

About 30 families lived on the village's single street.

Church of St Mary the Virgin, Clapham, believed to have been built in the 12th century. The main part of the village is known simply as The Street, a single long dead-end road coming off the A280 and containing the majority of the village's housing.

The village's single street is flanked by cottages built of stone or local brick, some retaining the small buildings in the gardens, originally privies or pig-sties.

The village's public schools are run by the Elmsford Board of Education and include Dixon Primary, Alice E. Grady Elementary and Alexander Hamilton Junior / Senior High School.

Most of the village's public services are provided by contract with Grandview Heights, including police and fire, and it is included in the Grandview Heights School District and public library system.

In the elections of November 2007, Rebecca Hamilton and Greg Hostetler were elected to the village council, and Brad Hudson and Dean King were elected to the village's board of public affairs.

The village's public park is named Pastime Park, and features baseball and softball diamonds, camping facilities, a nature walking path, two children's play parks, and the village's public pool, Pastime Pool.

Today the village's Shaker Cemetery is maintained by the township trustees and is open to the public ; while most of the settlement's buildings remain along Oxford Road, they are all privately owned.

The village's public house is called the Half Moon and is noted as being one of two inns in 1577.

The village's main public house was built in 1637 and was known as The Plough until 1798 when it was renamed The Lord Nelson in honour of the victory at the Battle of the Nile.

Located on the west side of the green, this was the village's major public building and landmark.

During the village's ' hey-day ', ten public houses over a half-mile ( 0. 8 km ) stretch of the High Street reflected the large mining population at the time

Every alternate Easter the residents of Cossington open their gardens to the public for two days for the ' Secret Gardens of Cossington ' in which the village's better gardeners show off their talents, with all the proceeds of ticket sales going to charity.

One of the village's unusual features is the Pack o ' Cards public house built around 1700 by George Ley.

The village's only public transport link is the number 31 / 131 bus service operated by First Glasgow to Milton and East Kilbride.

Prior to this the village was supplied by a series of shallow wells ( many of which still remain although bricked up under the village's more modern housing estates ), although there were three springs which fed public ponds at the Queen's Head, on Lexden Road, and near the White Hart, and there was a deep well at the brewery.

The village's only Indian restaurant is appropriately called The Four Counties Spice ; this used to be the village's only public house, which was appropriately called The Four Counties Inn.

Most of them have a church and a " Casa do Povo " ( people's house ), where the village's summer romarias or religious festivities are usually held.

The village's oldest house is Stag Cottage ( circa 1580 ) which is tucked away in a small courtyard known as Stag Fold.

The airfield was built in 1939, necessitating the demolition of Lyneham Court manor house, the buildings of Cranley Farm and the village's tennis courts.

Several of the village's houses were built in this era: the timber framed cruck house at Ball Corner, Bridge Cottage on the Avon and the Court House by the Church.

After 1525 at Madisonville, the type site, the village's house size becomes smaller and fewer with evidence to be " a less horticulture-centered, sedentary way of life ".

Other buildings of interest are the remaining buildings on the site of the former manor house, the mill, the old vicarage, the village's historic farmhouses, and the pinfold.

There are three summer theatres in Liperi: the Roukalahti summer theatre at the village's cultural house, the Risti summer theatre in the village of Risti, and the Liperi summer theatre at the Liperi stage.

By the time the archbishops inherited Fethard the village's great parish church had been built, and William, following the custom of the day, had granted the revenue which was owed to the church from the surrounding lands to a religious house, in this case the Hospital of St. John the Baptist in Dublin.

The Street ( Dodmore ) is the oldest of the village's settlements, where some of the manor house of Dodmore stands, although the original structure was badly damaged in an earthquake of 1382: it is close to the 14th century church, the parish church of St John the Baptist.

The village's only pub The Maid's Head, so named since the mid-18th century occupied a 15th-century thatched hall house, extended to the west in 1852, until it was hit by a fire in 1983.

Sir Charles Napier Senior, father to the more famous Sir Charles Napier, whose house, Merchistoun Hall ( named after his former home in Falkirk, Scotland ), is now a Grade II listed building and serves as the village's major community centre.

Also, tucked away in the village's winding streets (" The Warren "), is a house clad entirely in shells, known as " The Shell House ".

The origin of the village's name is still not very clear, but it is understood to come from a house called " Dunkirk ", lived in by a Fleming from Dunkerque on the border between France and Belgium.

" Jupiter and Mercurius in the house of Philemon and Baucis " by Peter Paul Rubens: Zeus and Mercury, testing a village's practice of hospitality, were received only by Baucis and Philemon, who were rewarded while their neighbors were punished.

Thornley miners played a key role in the formation of the Durham Miners ' Association, the first meeting of which was held in the grounds of the village's Half-Way House public house in 1869.

The village's amenities include a primary school, church, post office and public house.

The house is named for its location — adjacent to the village's plestor.

The village's former public house, The Three Horseshoes, is now a restaurant though it still has a bar that serves beer.
