The connector on the left is a 9-pin male ( DE9M ) connector plug, and the one on the right is a 25-pin female ( DB25F ) socket.

This joystick, while using the standard Atari 9-pin plug, offered two independent buttons, with the second button located on the base of the joystick.

However, presence of a 9-pin D-subminiature connector is neither necessary nor sufficient to indicate use of a serial port, since this connector was also used for video, joysticks, and other purposes.

Similarly, systems which were intended to be hot pluggable, such as the RS232 serial interface, are in practice only cold pluggable due to limitations of the connector ultimately chosen for the interface — in this case the 25-or 9-pin ' D ' style connector.

The only difference between a TV Boy and TV Boy 2 is that the former has two 9-pin, Atari-type joystick connectors for the optional use of external joysticks.

Starting around the time of the introduction of the IBM PC-AT, serial ports were commonly built with a 9-pin connector to save cost and space.
