Huygens died in The Hague on 8 July 1695, and was buried in the Grote Kerk.

It was a wooden church at the site of the current Grote Kerk on the Grote Markt ( central market square ).

Officially, the church in the center of town is called the Grote Kerk, since it is Dutch Reformed and they do not believe in patron saints.

The Grote Kerk was initially spared from iconoclasm, because the city's mayor ordered the closing of the church for several months in 1566.

Since many groups already had their own chapels in the Grote Kerk, this was conducted in an orderly way.

The new ( and current ) name became Grote Kerk.

A week later he was buried in the Grote Kerk in the Hague, together with his son, the famous scientist Christiaan Huygens.

Grote Kerk or St. Nicholaaskerk, of cathedral dimensions, was probably built at the beginning of the 15th Century.

* Grote or St. Jans Kerk ( Great or Saint John Church )-longest church in the Netherlands, famous for its stained glass windows which were made between 1530 and 1603, considered the most significant stained glass collection in the Netherlands.

Flemish architects Antonis Keldermans and Evert Spoorwater designed the Grote Kerk, the fortifications, the Cisterne and the town hall.

Around 1315 the city was expanded southwards, which included the construction of what is now called the Grote Kerk ( Large Church ).

An early pioneer of radio astronomy was Grote Reber, an amateur astronomer who constructed the first purpose built radio telescope in the late 1930s to follow up on the discovery of radio wavelength emissions from space by Karl Jansky.

The following year the race was called the Zandvoort Grand Prix and in 1950 it became the " Grote Prijs van Nederland " or Dutch Grand Prix.

However, in 2004 a tunnel was built under the city centre with two underground tram stations (" Spui " and " Grote Markt "); it is shared by RandstadRail lines 2, 3 and 4 and tram route 6.

An amateur radio operator, Grote Reber, was one of the pioneers of what became known as radio astronomy when he built the first parabolic " dish " radio telescope ( in diameter ) in his back yard in Illinois in 1937.

The B-side was Grote Broer, which translates as Big Brother.

In particular, the main square, Grote Markt, was largely destroyed in April 1945, at the Battle of Groningen.

The other was the Brinkmann cinema, located on the Grote Markt, which closed on 1 February 2012.

Grote Reber was inspired by Jansky's work, and built a parabolic radio telescope 9m in diameter in his own backyard in 1937.

On the island of Manhattan as it was when Europeans first saw it, the Great Kill ( Dutch: Grote Kil, Middle Dutch: Groote Kille ), which formed from three small streams that united near 10th Avenue and 40th street, wound through the low-lying Reed Valley renowned for fish and waterfowl to empty into the Hudson River at a deep bay on the river at the present 42nd Street.

Two men who learned of Jansky's 1933 discovery were of great influence on the later development of the new study of radio astronomy: one was Grote Reber, a radio engineer who singlehandedly built a radio telescope in his Illinois back yard in 1937 and did the first systematic survey of astronomical radio waves.

He was buried in Westminster Abbey in the same grave as Grote.

In opposition to Otto Gruppe, he denied that Plato affirmed the diurnal rotation of the earth ( Untersuchungen über das kosmische System des Platon, 1852 ), and when in opposition to him Grote published his opinions on the subject ( Plato and the Rotation of the Earth ) Böckh was ready with his reply.

Martineau became a candidate, and despite strong support from some quarters, potent opposition was organised by the anti-clerical George Grote, whose refusal to endorse Martineau resulted in the appointment of George Croom Robertson, then an untried man.

* Many interesting facades along an easy walk from AB-straat by Katelijnestraat towards the Grote Markt, just behind the Schepenhuis turn right along IJzerenleen and before the Grootbrug ( bridge ) again right to the Vismarkt, always maintain left along a few curves and across the Kraanbrug ( bridge ) on the Haverwerf, pass the renewed complex of the former Lamot brewery ; from the Grootbrug have a look on the river but stay on this bank: turn right onto the Zoutwerf till De Zalm ( The Salmon ), originally House of the Fishermans ' Guild, tread back and turn left to the Korenmarkt where minor traces of an early cloth hall remain: a 12th – 13th century wall and ditch held Mechelen on this side of the river.

His grandfather, Andreas, originally a Bremen merchant, was one of the founders ( on 1 January 1766 ) of the banking-house of Grote, Prescott & Company in Threadneedle Street, London ( the name of Grote did not disappear from the firm till 1879 ).
