However, this story may reflect a cultural influence which had the reverse direction: Hittite cuneiform texts mention a Minor Asian god called Appaliunas or Apalunas in connection with the city of Wilusa attested in Hittite inscriptions, which is now generally regarded as being identical with the Greek Ilion by most scholars.

Plutarch tells a story that at Bactra, in 327 BC in a debate with Callisthenes, he advised all to worship Alexander as a god even during his lifetime, is with greater probability attributed to the Sicilian Cleon.

He is well known as the lover of Aphrodite, the goddess of love who was married to Hephaestus, god of craftsmanship, but the most famous story involving the couple shows them exposed to ridicule through the wronged husband's clever device.

* Many religions involve the story of a god who undergoes death and resurrection ( see life-death-rebirth deity ).

" Davidson says that while the creature may vary, the horse is fairly common " in the lands where horses are in general use, and Sleipnir's ability to bear the god through the air is typical of the shaman's steed " and cites an example from a study of shamanism by Mircea Eliade of an eight-legged foal from a story of a Buryat shaman.

A similar story is found in Hyginus, according to whom Scylla was the daughter of the river god Crataeis and was loved by Glaucus, but Glaucus himself was also loved by the sorceress Circe.

In related stories, the creation idea is caused by a single entity emanating or producing something by him-or herself, as in the Tibetan Buddhism concept of Adi-Buddha, the ancient Greek story of Gaia ( Mother Earth ), the Aztec goddess Coatlicue myth, the ancient Egyptian god Atum story, or the Genesis creation narrative.

A later myth, when the cult of Osiris gained more authority, tells the story of Anubis, the god of the underworld.

A nearly identical story is told by Plutarch, in his On Isis and Osiris, of the goddess Isis burning away the mortality of Prince Maneros of Byblos, son of Queen Astarte, and being likewise interrupted before completing the process.

The Osiris myth is the most elaborate and influential story in ancient Egyptian mythology.

The remainder of the story focuses on Horus, the product of Isis and Osiris ' union, who is first a vulnerable child protected by his mother and then becomes Set's rival for the throne.

Once the myth of Osiris and Isis had begun to be told, since Osiris was now a life-death-rebirth deity, in common with many cultures, his story was associated with the annual harvest, and the annual disappearance of any visible life in the crop.
