Sales Manager and Secretary Elbridge Blish Thompson who was a Hanover College and Yale University alumnus lost his life in the sinking of the RMS Lusitania.

After graduation, he spent 20 years working for the J. Walter Thompson advertising agency in both Los Angeles and New York City ; other employees of this firm during this period included Ronald Ziegler, who went on to serve as White House Press Secretary in the Nixon administration.

His older brother, Tommy Thompson, a Republican, was formerly Governor of Wisconsin and United States Secretary of Health and Human Services.

Doyle ran against Republican Scott McCallum, the former Lieutenant Governor who had assumed the office of Governor in 2001 after Tommy Thompson left to become Secretary of Health and Human Services in the Bush administration.

Born in Crookston, Minnesota, on 4 May 1926, Thompson began flying with the U. S. Navy as a pilot trainee at age 19.

Thompson was also one of the 12 NASA, Air Force, and Navy pilots to fly the North American X-15 rocket-powered research aircraft between 1959 and 1968.

Henderson was also characteristically blunt in assessing Gale's qualifications to the new Secretary of the Navy, Smith Thompson.

Shortly after Gale assumed his post, Archibald Henderson circumvented Gale and wrote directly to Navy Secretary Smith Thompson requesting to join General Andrew Jackson who was serving as military governor in Florida.
