Three Musicians is a classic example of Synthetic cubism.

That year, shortly after the Three Mile Island nuclear accident, from September 19 to September 22, a series of concerts were held at New York City's Madison Square Garden and sponsored by Musicians United for Safe Energy ( MUSE ), a group of musicians against nuclear power, co-founded by John Hall.

Of the paintings by Jacob Jordaens in the Museum, the most notable are Three strolling Musicians, The Wedding of Thetis and Peleus and the splendid Family Portrait.

The piece opens similarly to many other Reich's own works: a piano or mallet instrument pulsing on the beat, with another piano or marimba soon fading in on the offbeats ( Music for 18 Musicians, Sextet, Three Movements for Orchestra ).

Also characteristic of several of Reich's pieces, such as New York Counterpoint, Electric Counterpoint, Sextet, Music for 18 Musicians, Three Movements for Orchestra, the exposition of the pulse is followed by pulsed notes in the choir and orchestra fading in and out over the course of a chord progression.

The cover painting, titled " Snakecharmer & Reclining Octopus " by Barney Bubbles ( but credited to " Sal Forlenza ") is a pastiche of " Three Musicians " by Pablo Picasso, and letters on the zipper-like creatures in the upper right spell " PABLO SI ".

Several of these paintings are parodies of famous works, including: a typical painting by Giorgio De Chirico, the 1889 self-portrait by Vincent van Gogh, The Persistence of Memory by Salvador Dali, Three Musicians by Picasso ( starring only Lisa as the saxophone player ), Ascending and Descending by M. C.

Before the final segment Bart walks past parodies of The Death of Marat by Jacques Louis David, again Lisa as one of Picasso's " Three Musicians ", The Son of Man by René Magritte and Dogs Playing Poker.

Then Homer gets attacked by Three Musicians by Pablo Picasso in which their instruments turn into machine guns and shoots at Homer.
