The Three Witnesses testified to having seen an angel present the gold plates, and to having heard God bear witness to its truth.

Three Witnesses besides Joseph Smith also reported that they saw Moroni in visions in 1829, as did several other witnesses who each said they had their own vision.

As a further complication, Mary Whitmer, mother to one of the Three Witnesses and four of the Eight Witnesses, said she had a vision of the golden plates, shown to her by an angel whom she always called " Brother Nephi ", who may or may not have been the same angel to which Smith referred.

Nephi predicts the translation of the Book of Mormon and of the Three Witnesses who would testify that it was true.

* Three Witnesses

This mission was led by Martin Harris, the financier of the Book of Mormon and one of its Three Witnesses.

Martin Harris ( May 18, 1783 – July 10, 1875 ) was an early convert to the Latter Day Saint movement who underwrote the first printing of the Book of Mormon and also served as one of Three Witnesses who testified that they had seen the golden plates from which Joseph Smith said the Book of Mormon had been translated.

Harris, along with Cowdery and David Whitmer, was one of these Three Witnesses, although Joseph Smith clearly indicated that Harris's experience occurred separately from that of Whitmer and Cowdery.

He became one of the Three Witnesses of the Book of Mormon's golden plates, one of the first Latter Day Saint apostles, and the Second Elder of the church.

They became known as the Three Witnesses, and their testimony has been published with nearly every edition of the Book of Mormon.

One of the key reasons why The Church of Jesus Christ believes Joseph Smith received many revelations contrary to the Word of God was described by one of the Three Witnesses to the Book of Mormon, David Whitmer.

David Whitmer ( January 7, 1805 – January 25, 1888 ) was an early adherent of the Latter Day Saint movement who eventually became the most interviewed of the Three Witnesses to the Book of Mormon's Golden Plates.

" None of the Three Witnesses were ordained to that apostleship.

Whitmer used his position as one of the Three Witnesses to condemn Joseph Smith's church.

Because Oliver Cowdery died in 1850 at age 43 and Martin Harris died in 1875 at age 91, David Whitmer was the only survivor of the Three Witnesses for 13 years.
