Traditional Chinese medicine ( TCM ) (: " Chinese medicine ") is a broad range of medicine practices sharing common theoretical concepts which have been developed in China and are based on a tradition of more than 2, 000 years, including various forms of herbal medicine, acupuncture, massage ( Tui na ), exercise ( qigong ), and dietary therapy.

Traditional Chinese Medicine that is based on the use of herbal medicine, acupuncture, massage and other forms of therapy has been practiced in China for thousands of years.

In China, the Traditional Chinese Medicine approach is used in formulating natural herbal teas and they are very popular in enhancing health and addressing core issues within the body ; e. g. formulated recipes like hawthorn plus oolong / pu-er can address the high fat level in body's bloodstream.

' Traditional Medicine ' is also in vogue and the " Institute of Traditional Medicine " has been set up in Thimphu to promote this widely practiced herbal medical cure in rural areas of Bhutan.

The Institute of Traditional Medicine was set up in 1979 with assistance from World Health Organization ( WHO ) to develop and popularise the herbal medicine, which has been used by the rural people in Bhutan for past many centuries.

The NCAHF advocates regulations for a special OTC category called " Traditional Herbal Remedies " ( THRs ) with an adverse reaction surveillance program, product batches marked for identification and tracking, package label warnings about proposed dangers of self-treatment, oversight requirements from outside of the herbal industry, and strong penalties for unapproved changes in herbal product formulations.

Some examples of strong informal and to some degree institutionalized folk medicine traditions are: Traditional Korean medicine, Arabic indigenous medicine ( source of Unani medicine, along with Ancient Greek medicine ), Haitian folk medicine, Uyghur traditional medicine, Various African herbal folk remedies, Celtic traditional medicine ( in part practiced by the Irish medical families ), Japanese Kampō medicine, Traditional Aboriginal Bush medicine, Georgian folk medicine, and other.

Traditional medicine depends on herbal treatments, acupuncture, acupressure, moxibustion ( burning of herbs over acupuncture points ), " cupping " ( local suction of skin ), qigong ( coordinated movement, breathing, and awareness ), tui na ( massage ), and other culturally unique practices.

Regarding Traditional Chinese herbal therapy, only few trials exist that are considered to be of adequate methodology by modern western medical researchers, and its effectiveness therefore is considered poorly documented.

Traditional healers called suruhanas are still greatly respected for their knowledge of herbal treatments and spirits.
