The voievod title was kept in its initial form by the Wallachian ( Romanian ) nobility of Ţara Haţegului and Maramureş ( In Transylvania ), where the title of voievod, together with the princely cneaz title, had the meaning of noble or local ruler, but also leader of local armies or militias.

The union of the regions of Transylvania, Maramureș, Crișana and Banat with the Old Kingdom of Romania was ratified in 1920 by the Treaty of Trianon, which recognised the sovereignty of Romania over these regions and settled the border between the independent Republic of Hungary and the Kingdom of Romania.

Even before the union with Romania, ethnic Romanians comprised the overall majority in Transylvania.

Transylvania is often associated with vampires ( chiefly due to Bram Stoker's novel Dracula and its film adaptations ) and the horror genre in general, while the region is also known for the scenic beauty of its Carpathian landscape and its rich history.

Transylvania, with an alternative Latin prepositional prefix, means " on the other side of the woods ".

The largest Unitarian denomination worldwide today is also the oldest surviving Unitarian denomination ( since 1565, first use of the term " Unitarian " 1600 ); the Unitarian Church of Transylvania ( in Romania, which is union with the Unitarian Church in Hungary ).

The modern Unitarian Church in Hungary ( 25, 000 members ) and the Transylvanian Unitarian Church ( 75, 000 members ) are affiliated with the ICUU and claim continuity with the historical Unitarian Christian tradition established by Ferenc Dávid in 1565 in Transylvania under John II Sigismund Zápolya.

The war's end triggered the abdication of aging monarchies and the collapse of the last modern empires of Russia, Germany, the Ottomans and Austria-Hungary, with the latter splintered into Austria, Hungary, southern Poland ( who acquired most of their land in a war with Soviet Russia ), Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia, as well as the unification of Romania with Transylvania and Moldavia.

The renewed offensive played a part in ensuring the union of Transylvania with Romania.

The treaty also marked out the borders of the new principality, which included not only the historical province of Transylvania, but also some neighboring counties, such as Bihor and Maramureş, thenceforward collectively known as Partium.

It originated in Hungary and was popularized by Roma music ( Cigány ) bands in Hungary and neighboring lands of Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Burgenland, Croatia, Ukraine, Poland, Transylvania and Moravia, as well as among the Banat Bulgarians, including those in Bulgaria.

Hungarian folk music has been influential in neighboring areas such as Romania, Slovakia, southern Poland, and especially in southern Slovakia and the Romanian region of Transylvania, both home to significant numbers of Hungarians.

The neighboring rulers Andrew Báthory in Transylvania and Ieremia Movilă in Moldavia were friendly towards Poland.

Curiously similar is the tradition of Dracula the vampire in the neighboring region of Transylvania, Romania: he was reputedly able to disappear through evaporation.
