In 1788 Jean Jacques Barthelemy ( 1716 – 95 ), a highly esteemed classical scholar and Jesuit, published The Travels of Anacharsis the Younger in Greece, about a young Scythian descended from Anacharsis.

The new prominence of Anacharsis was sparked by Jean-Jacques Barthélemy's fanciful Travels of Anacharsis the Younger in Greece ( 1788 ), a learned imaginary travel journal, one of the first historical novels, which a modern scholar has called " the encyclopedia of the new cult of the antique " in the late 18th century.
The result of their labours were the Ionian Antiquities in two magnificent folios published by the Dilettanti in 1769, and, later, Chandler's record of the tour, Travels in Greece, or an Account of a Tour Made at the Expense of the Society Of Dillettanti ( 1776 ).
Other works by Chandler were Inscriptiones Antiquae pleraeque nondum editae ( Oxford, 1774 ); Travels in Asia Minor ( 1775 ); Travels in Greece ( 1776 ); History of Ilium ( 1803 ), in which he asserted the accuracy of Homer's geography.
A complete edition ( with notes by Nicholas Revett ) of the Travels in Asia Minor and Greece was published by R. Churton ( Oxford, 1825 ), with an Account of the Author.
He published his discovery in the third volume of his Travels in Northern Greece in 1835.
His principal work was the Travels and Archaeological Researches in Greece ( in German and French, 1826-1830 ), of which only two volumes were published, dealing with the island of Ceos and the metopes of the Parthenon.
In 1832 he took his MA degree, and as a travelling Fellow undertook a journey in Italy Greece, Asia Minor and Crete, of which he published his two-volume Travels in Crete.
