Before the launch of the Qt Project, it was produced by Nokia's Qt Development Frameworks division, which came into being after Nokia's acquisition of the Norwegian company Trolltech, the original producer of Qt.

On 5 June 2008 Nokia ’ s voluntary tender offer was approved for all the shares in Trolltech.

On 30 September 2008, Trolltech was renamed as Qt Software, and Qtopia has been renamed as Qt Extended.

It was used until Qt 3. 0, as Trolltech toolkit version 4. 0 was released under GPL version 2.

" This was shortly followed by the SL-5500 ; both used ' Embedix ' - an embedded version of the Linux operating system developed by Lineo-combined with Qtopia, the Qt toolkit-based embedded application environment developed by Trolltech.

The Norwegian company Trolltech, who develop the Qt Development Frameworks, used this " encheferization " for a more serious purpose – although the friendly rivalry between Norwegians and Swedes perhaps was its inspiration.

Originally created by Arnt Gulbrandsen in 1995 while he was working at Trolltech, it is currently maintained by Matthias Andree and Ralf Wildenhues.

The program was previously named Benoit's Mix after its creator, Benoit Schillings, now CTO of Trolltech.

And by 17 June 2008, Nokia had completed its acquisition of Trolltech.

The Q Public License ( QPL ) is a non-copyleft license, created by Trolltech for its free edition of the Qt.

As KDE grew in popularity, the free software community urged Trolltech to put Qt under a license ( the QPL ) that would assure that it would remain free software forever and could be used and developed by commercial third-parties.

What generally distinguishes this " second generation " of companies, such as MySQL AB and Trolltech, from earlier " open source " business models is dual licensing — while the software may be made available under the provisions of some open source license, the software is, in fact, owned by the commercial companies who seek to derive revenues from selling traditional software licenses.

Based on the Qt produced by Trolltech, Album Shaper runs on Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, FreeBSD, and other X11 based systems.

Trolltech completed an initial public offering ( IPO ) on the Oslo Stock Exchange in July, 2006.

Matthias Ettrich chose to use Trolltech ’ s Qt framework for the KDE project.

Qt Development Frameworks ( formerly known as Qt Software, Trolltech and as Quasar Technologies ) is an Oslo, Norway-based software company best known for its Qt toolkit and application framework.

On 28 January 2008, Nokia announced that they had entered into an agreement that Nokia would make a public voluntary tender offer to acquire Trolltech.

Trolltech has since accepted this offer.

Eventually, under pressure, Trolltech dual-licensed Qt for use under the terms of the GPL or the QPL.

Porten, a KDE developer and former Trolltech employee, is the CEO of Froglogic, a consultancy company related to Qt development.
