The MTR operates the metro network within inner urban Hong Kong, Kowloon Peninsula and northern part of Hong Kong Island with newly developed areas, Tsuen Wan, Tseung Kwan O, Tung Chung, Hong Kong Disneyland, the Hong Kong International Airport, the northeastern and northwestern parts of the New Territories.

The ten lines are the East Rail, Kwun Tong, Tsuen Wan, Island, Tung Chung, Tseung Kwan O, West Rail, Ma On Shan, the Airport Express and the Disneyland Resort lines.

The rail line is part of MTR's Tung Chung Line and Airport Express.

Rail services that connect the towns in the New Territories with the city centres of Kowloon and Hong Kong Island are provided by the East Rail Line, West Rail Line and Tung Chung Line.

Hong Kong Island is connected to the Kowloon Peninsula on the mainland by two road-only tunnels ( the Cross-Harbour Tunnel and the Western Harbour Tunnel ), two MTR railway tunnels ( Tsuen Wan Line and Tung Chung Line ) and one combined road and MTR rail link tunnel ( Eastern Harbour Tunnel, containing the Tseung Kwan O Line and road traffic in separate conduits running side by side ).

Originally the site of fishing villages, the island has been developed in recent years with the construction of Tung Chung New Town on its north-western coast and the completion of several major infrastructure projects, including Lantau Link ( 1997 ), Hong Kong International Airport ( 1998 ), Hong Kong Disneyland ( 2005 ) and Ngong Ping 360 ( 2006 ).

The completion of the Hong Kong International Airport at Chek Lap Kok in 1998 has led to economic development in north-western Lantau ; the once quiet village of Tung Chung became a new town and is now home to over 25, 000 people located in 30 to 50 storey high-rise housing estates and condominiums located near the airport.

Over the next few years, the population of the North Lantau New Town is expected to increase to a target population of over 200, 000 across 7. 6 km² of reclaimed land stretching from Tung Chung to Tai Ho.

These emperors are also believed to have held court in the Tung Chung valley, which takes its name from a local hero who gave up his life for the emperor.

Walkers can ascend from Tung Chung to the monastery in two hours.

Visitors can also take a 25 minute ride on a Ngong Ping 360 from Tung Chung to the Ngong Ping Plateau.

Tung Chung Fort was built in 1817 to thwart the opium trade and defend the coast from pirates.

The ruins of the Tung Chung Battery, also a historical monument, are located nearby.

The best known of these is the 70 kilometre, 12 section Lantau Trailcomposed of beauty of natural stone steps and the dense woodland along a 3-kilometer stretch. Section 11 of the Lantau Trail starts just across the Tung Chung Road, which is not far from Ngong Ping 360.

It is located off the north coast of Lantau, near the new town of Tung Chung and is connected to urban areas by the Lantau Link, which is composed of the Kap Shui Mun Bridge, the Ma Wan Viaduct, and the Tsing Ma Bridge.

Fanling North is one of three new development areas currently being planned for North District, in parallel with Ta Kwu Ling and Kwu Tung North.

The one important non-Caucasian character, the Asian Ky Tung, is from Earth.

Tung Chung Battery was one of the two military forts built in the 22nd year of Jiaqing reign ( 1817 ) at the foot of the Rocky Lion Hill at Tung Chung according to the Guangdong Annals.

Tung Chung Stream is the only known Hong Kong site for the rare fish, Acrossocheilus ( Lissolichthys ) wenchowensis beijiangensis ( 北江光唇魚 ) and one of only two sites on Lantau where the locally rare Crested Kingfisher, Cervie lugubris, has been recorded.

Turning south from Tung Chung Road, one can get to the Cheung Sha beaches.

The Tung Chung Line is one of the 10 lines of the MTR system in Hong Kong.

There will be two stations on the island, one " Lei Tung " for Lei Tung Estate and one " South Horizons " serving Marina Square, a mini mall with a food market, and South Horizons, a private estates covering the western edge of the island.

In 1996, KMB formed a subsidiary named Long Win Bus Company on Lantau Link with service to the new Hong Kong International Airport and Tung Chung.

After the development of Tung Chung new town in 1998, New Lantao Bus gained operation of an airport bus route A35, connecting Mui Wo in southern part of Lantao Island and the airport in the northern part.

As the number of residents in Tung Chung keep increasing, New Lantao Bus soon found out that the 3 Dennis Darts were not capable to handle the demand of the new routes.

Long Win Bus Company Limited () provides bus service to northern Lantau Island ( Tung Chung new town and Hong Kong Disneyland ) and the Hong Kong International Airport.

Developed as part of the Airport Core Programme, the North Lantau New Town is the first new town on an outlying island of Hong Kong, with the first phases built on reclaimed land to the north, east and northeast of the original Tung Chung Town.

According to the information from the Hong Kong Territory Development Department, Tung Chung is being developed in 4 phases into a new town with a target population of 250, 000 people.
