The new U-Bahn station was being built at the same time as the hotel and actually ran through the hotel's basement, cutting it in half, thus making the construction of both into something of a technical challenge, but unlike the Wertheim department store ( and contrary to several sources ), the hotel did not enjoy a separate entrance directly from the station.

Improvements to the infrastructure were needed ; in 1896 the construction of the subway ( U-Bahn ) began and was completed in 1902.

There was also an unfortunate politicisation of the U-Bahn issue: in the 1954 and 1959 city council elections, the conservative Austrian People's Party championed construction of a U-Bahn, but the more powerful Social Democratic Party of Austria campaigned for putting housing first.

The construction of the Vienna U-Bahn network can be divided into several stages:

The area of West Berlin adjacent to Potsdamer Platz then required a connection to the U-Bahn, and this need was eventually met by the construction of the M-Bahn, which used the abandoned U-Bahn platforms at Gleisdreieck and the U-Bahn tracks northwards towards the border.

Both buildings were disassembled, renovated, and then reassembled two metres higher than their original location after completion of U-Bahn construction.

Until construction of the U-Bahn, the trams were the primary mode of public transport in Vienna.

Beginning in 1978, in the course of construction of the U-Bahn, tram routes parallelling U-Bahn routes were introduced.

In 1973 the chapel was rediscovered during construction of the Vienna U-Bahn.

The pavilions of the former Karlsplatz Stadtbahn Station remain despite the construction of the U-Bahn system.

In the course of the construction of the U-Bahn, the Graben was rebuilt in successive phases, and the pedestrian zone was gradually expanded.

In connection with the construction of the U-Bahn, the Graben became a pedestrian zone.

Near Uhlandstraße U-Bahn station is the Kempinski hotel as well as the Theater am Kurfürstendamm at the site of a former exhibition hall of the Berlin Secession art association.

New U-Bahn and S-Bahn lines were planned to run directly beneath almost the whole length of the axis, and the city's entire underground network reoriented to gravitate towards this new hub ( at least one tunnel section, around 220 metres in length, was actually constructed and still exists today, buried some 20 metres beneath the Tiergarten, despite having never seen a train ).

A new U-Bahn station has also been built at Potsdamer Platz itself, although a decision is still pending on whether to proceed with completion of the line passing through it ; in the meantime the station area serves as an impromptu art gallery and exhibition space.

The center of nightlife is the region around the U-Bahn station Eberswalder Straße at the intersections of Schönhauser Allee, Danziger Straße, Eberswalder Straße, Kastanienallee and Pappelallee.

Berlin Jungfernheide is a railway station located at Charlottenburg-Nord, in the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district of Berlin, served by the S-Bahn lines and, the U-Bahn line and Regional-Express trains of the Deutsche Bahn.

Friedenau has access to the Berlin U-Bahn network at Innsbrucker Platz station ( U4 ) as well as at Bundesplatz, Friedrich-Wilhelm-Platz and Walther-Schreiber-Platz ( U9 ).

The underground station Hallesches Tor is part of the Berlin U-Bahn network at the intersection of the east-west bound U1 and the north-south bound U6 in the Kreuzberg district.

The U1 platform on a viaduct at the banks of the Landwehrkanal opened on 18 February 1902 with Berlin's first U-Bahn line ( Stammstrecke ) from Stralauer Tor to Potsdamer Platz.

The station located on a viaduct at the northern shore of the Landwehrkanal is part of the first Stammstrecke route of the Berlin U-Bahn opened on February 15, 1902.

The line ran approximately north-south from a station at Kemperplatz on the edge of the Tiergarten park, with three stations in total, the most southernly being on the lower level of the present-day Gleisdreieck U-Bahn interchange.

Popular destinations include the Grunewald trails north from the Onkel Toms Hütte U-Bahn station and neighborhood shopping center, the walk from Krumme Lanke U-Bahn station to the lake of the same name, and the cross-Zehlendorf walk from the end of the U-Bahn at Krumme Lanke to the S-Bahn station in the center of old Zehlendorf.

Thus Hamburg became the third German city ( after Berlin, 1902 and Schöneberg, 1910 ) to have a U-Bahn ( then known as the High and Underground Railway ( Hoch-und Untergrundbahn ) as it is largely either elevated or in tunnels-not much at street level ).

The U-Bahn stop at Studentenstadt was opened on October 19, 1971, just as 8 of the 14 houses were completed.

Construction began on 3 November 1969 on and under Karlsplatz, where three lines of the basic network were to meet, and where central control of the U-Bahn was initially located.

On 25 February 1978, the first Vienna U-Bahn route between Karlsplatz and Reumannplatz, the U1, went into operation.

The first stretch of newly constructed U-Bahn rail was placed in operation in 1978 ( U1 from Reumannplatz to Karlsplatz ).

Founded by German merchant Georg Wertheim ( 1857 – 1939 ), designed by architect Alfred Messel ( 1853 – 1909 ), opened in 1897 and extended several times over the following 40 years, it ultimately possessed a floor area double that of the Reichstag, a 330-metre-long granite and plate glass facade along Leipziger Straße, 83 elevators, three escalators, 1, 000 telephones, 10, 000 lamps, five kilometres of pneumatic tubing for moving items from the various departments to the packing area, and a separate entrance directly from the nearby U-Bahn station.

U-Bahn connection to the inner city is provided by the U6 line with the stations Otisstraße, Holzhauser Straße, Borsigwerke and Alt-Tegel.

The U-Bahn system reached its pre-wall status in 1995 with the reopening of Warschauer Straße on U1.

Berlin Warschauer Straße station is an S-Bahn and U-Bahn station located on Warschauer Straße in the Friedrichshain locality of central Berlin, Germany.

The station on the first Berlin U-Bahn line from Potsdamer Platz to Stralauer Tor was opened on February 18, 1902 on a viaduct above Skalitzer Straße.

The U-Bahn arrived first, from the south ; begun on 10 September 1896, it opened on 18 February 1902, with a new and better sited station being provided on 29 September 1907, and the line itself being extended north and east on 1 October 1908.

Below ground, the U-Bahn section through Potsdamer Platz had closed entirely ; although the S-Bahn line itself remained open, it suffered from a quirk of geography in that it briefly passed through East German territory en route from one part of West Berlin to another.

German tram-train systems are generally called Stadtbahn ; only two among them feature premetro sections, although a metro ( U-Bahn ) has never been planned there:

" Linie 1 ", a musical performed by Berlin's Grips-Theater, is set completely in stations and trains of the Berlin U-Bahn ; a movie version has also been produced.

One of the buildings is now used as an exhibition space by the Vienna Museum, with an U-Bahn entrance in its rear ; the other is used as a café.

During rush hours, many routes run at intervals of two to five minutes ; during evening hours, the U-Bahn runs at 7 and a half minute intervals and trams and buses every ten or 15 minutes.

Further cutbacks are expected in the next few years as the U-Bahn continues to expand ; however, extensions and new lines are also planned, above all in the 21st and 22nd districts.

It was the final stop in West Berlin ; the next station, Berlin Friedrichstraße, was in the Soviet zone, although it served as a stop on both the West Berlin S-and U-Bahn systems ; these parts of the station were sealed off and inaccessible to East Berliners.
