As a sophomore, Stokes was named Defensive MVP of the College Cup as he helped UNC to a national championship.

That year, he led UNC to a Southern Conference championship and the NCAA tournament.

In 1975 he became the head coach and athletic director at UNC Charlotte, where in three seasons he took the 49ers to one NIT championship game ( 1976 ) and to the NCAA Final Four ( 1977 ).

In his sophomore season at UNC, Stackhouse led the team in scoring with 19. 2 points per game and averaged 8. 2 rebounds per contest.

In only their second meeting against former KU coach Roy Williams, the Jayhawks sprinted with UNC to a 47-47 halftime tie, then slowed the pace in the second half, and switched to a triangle-and-two zone defense, ultimately turning a close game with four minutes to play into a runaway 80-67 victory and a trip to New Orleans for the Final Four.

Williams went on to play on the UNC Freshmen team at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and study the game under legendary coach Dean Smith.

While coaching at UNC, he led the team to their first appearance in the title game.

In his UNC career, he scored 1, 709 points ( 24. 8 points per game ), and grabbed 1, 062 rebounds ( 15. 4 rebounds per game ).

After going 33 – 4 and winning the ACC regular season, McCants ' 16. 4 points per game helped secure UNC one of the four number one seeds in the NCAA Tournament.

While lining up hours before games ( the UNC game in particular ) had always been a regular practice, every now and then a group of students would be ambitious enough to get their sleeping bags out and sleep in line the night before in order to ensure their front row seats.

In 1986 Kimberly Reed, a resident of the Mirecourt selective living group, took the practice one step further and decided with a group of her Mirecourt friends to line up even earlier for the UNC game and sleep in tents.

The UNC game is always a tenting game but potentially there may be a second game where tent order determines seating.

In December 2006, the Duke Student Government banned Robertson Scholars from UNC ( who attend Duke for one semester ) from participating in tenting for the game versus UNC, although they can still get in via the walk-up line.

Stokes helped Carolina to back to back Southern Derby Cup championships and plans on graduating from UNC in the summer of 2009.

His family also had a strong connection to the nearby University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill ; his grandfather had taught Latin and Greek at the university, and his great-uncle Wisconsin Royster had helped to create the medical school at UNC.

In 1910, student Marvin Rich along with certain school officials helped lobby to create a varsity basketball squad at UNC.

UNC has been very successful at college basketball and women ’ s soccer, and a passion for these sports has been a distinctive feature of the town's culture, fueled by the rivalry among North Carolina's four ACC teams: the North Carolina Tar Heels, the Duke Blue Devils, the NC State Wolfpack, and the Wake Forest Demon Deacons.

Royster was a 1935 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill ; during his time at UNC he was a member of the Philanthropic Society and served as the editor of the student newspaper, The Daily Tar Heel.

At UNC, Carr was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and wrote at student newspaper The Daily Tar Heel.

As an assistant, Guthridge was renowned for his success in coaching the fundamentals of pivot play to a long series of successful UNC big men, and as the Tar Heels ' primary shooting coach.

The UNC Tar Heels return to WBT in 2012.

McGuire's Marquette team, led by Butch Lee and Jerome Whitehead, defeated Dean Smith's North Carolina Tar Heels for the title, just two days after Whitehead received a full court pass then subsequently made a last second shot ( exactly the same style of shot made by Duke's Christian Laettner against Kentucky fifteen years later ) propelling Marquette past UNC Charlotte in the national semifinals.

Cartmell came to UNC in 1909 as a track-and-field coach for the Tar Heels.

While at UNC, Troutman was a member of the Tar Heel Voices, a co-ed collegiate a cappella group.

Between 2007 and 2011, he served as the head coach of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill ( UNC ) Tar Heels football team from 2007 until the summer of 2011, when a series of National Collegiate Athletic Association ( NCAA ) investigations resulted in his dismissal.

Davis led the 2009 Tar Heels to another 8 – 4 regular season record and a second straight bowl appearance, the first time since the 1997 – 1998 seasons that UNC had made consecutive bowl appearances.
