The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe ( UNECE or ECE ) was established in 1947 to encourage economic cooperation among its member states.

The UNECE Convention on Access to Information, Public Participation in Decision-making and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters, usually known as the Aarhus Convention, was signed on June 25, 1998 in the Danish city of Aarhus.

The first amendment was adopted in Sofia in 2001 ; once in force it will open the Convention to accession upon approval by United Nations Member States that are not members of the UNECE.

The Protocol on Strategic Environmental Assessment was negotiated by the member States of the UNECE ( in this instance Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia ).

The TIR Convention or International Road Transport Convention was adopted under the auspices of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe ( UNECE ).

The EU and Japan have already indicated that they intend to incorporate the new UNECE Regulation in their respective rules on technical standards for vehicles

The United Nations in Geneva ( UNECE ) has adopted the first international regulation ( Regulation 100 ) on safety of both fully electric and hybrid electric cars to ensure that cars with a high voltage electric power train, such as hybrid and fully electric vehicles, are as safe as combustion cars.

Since 1979 the Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution has addressed some of the major environmental problems of the UNECE region through scientific collaboration and policy negotiation.

The UN reorganised UNECE with organisations under it like UN / CEFACT.

UN / LOCODE, the United Nations Code for Trade and Transport Locations, is a geographic coding scheme developed and maintained by United Nations Economic Commission for Europe ( UNECE ), a unit of the United Nations.

The Convention, which now has 51 Parties, identifies the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe ( UNECE ) as its secretariat.

Currently, the Convention's priority activities include review and possible revision of its most recent protocols, implementation of the Convention and its protocols across the entire UNECE region ( with special focus on Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia and South-East Europe ) and sharing its knowledge and information with other regions of the world.

The UNECE secretariat headquarters is in Geneva, Switzerland, and has an approximate budget of US $ 50 million.

It also reaches Central Asian countries like Kyrgyzstan, since they are members of the UNECE.

These irregularities exist just because it is hard to maintain good order when extending the network, and the UNECE does not want to change road numbers unnecessarily.

In Europe they are based on the UNECE Vienna Convention on Road Signs and Signals.

In many countries the legislated error in speedometer readings is ultimately governed by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe ( UNECE ) Regulation 39 which covers those aspects of vehicle type approval which relate to speedometers.

The main purpose of the UNECE regulations is to facilitate trade in motor vehicles by agreeing uniform type approval standards rather than requiring a vehicle model to undergo different approval processes in each country in which it is to be sold.

The UNECE regulation relaxes the requirements for vehicles mass produced following type approval.

All vehicles manufactured on or after 1 July 2007, and all models of vehicle introduced on or after 1 July 2006, must conform to UNECE Regulation 39.

The amended Road Vehicles ( Construction and Use ) Regulations 1986 permits the use of speedometers that meet either the requirements of EC Council Directive 75 / 443 ( as amended by Directive 97 / 39 ) or UNECE Regulation 39.

As with the UNECE regulation and the EC Directives, the speedometer must never show an indicated speed less than the actual speed.
