As an NGO at the United Nations, Sōka Gakkai was admitted as an NGO associated with the Department of Public Information ( DPI ) and was listed as an NGO in cooperation with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees ( UNHCR ), both in 1981.

SGI was granted consultative status with the Economic and Social Council ( ECOSOC ) of the UN in 1983 and has been listed with UNHCR since 1997 "..

The Nansen Refugee Award for 2002 was awarded to the crew of the Tampa by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees ( UNHCR ) for their efforts to follow international principles of saving people in distress at sea.

As the scale and complexity of refugee issues continued to increase, the UNHCR and the international community at large was better positioned to adapt.

Prince Sadruddin began as a Special Envoy to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees ( UNHCR ) in 1959 with a focus on World Refugee Year ( 1959 – 1960 ).
