Since its inception in 1994, the UW had to cope with internal frictions between various factions: liberal socialists ( such as Leszek Balcerowicz ), those proposing a more liberal economic agenda in a more conservative, bourgeois guise ( such as Donald Tusk ), more progressive social democrats such as Jacek Kuroń, and intellectual former civil rights activists such as Bronisław Geremek or Tadeusz Mazowiecki, who also has a strong background in liberal Catholicism and leans towards Christian democracy.

UW has a long-standing intellectual property policy that leaves ownership rights with the inventor, rather than the university, which has helped create many spin-off companies that maintain a good relationship with UW.

For example, the Obihiro University of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine has shown interest in marketing ice cream and other dairy products as the Babcock Dairy does at UW – Madison.

In the 50 years since adding the Milwaukee campus to the UW System, UWM has expanded to 12 schools and colleges and now offers 84 undergraduate programs and 48 graduate programs, including 22 doctoral degree programs, with a university-wide focus on academic research, teaching and community service.

Prep boys ' basketball has a rich tradition of players who have gone on to star in college and the NBA, including Spencer Hawes ( UW and Philadelphia 76ers ), Martell Webster ( Minnesota Timberwolves ), Erik Bond ( St. Mary's College and Cal ), Patrick Nyeko ( Nevada ), David Emslie ( Santa Clara ), Jeffrey Day ( Creighton and UW ), Chad Troyer ( Pacific ), Mitch Brewe ( UC Santa Barbara ) and a number of other players at DII and DIII schools.

He is currently Associate Provost, Information Systems & Technology at UW, a position he has held since July, 2003, and also has been serving as interim Dean of Graduate Studies since October, 2007.

Since its founding, WARF has served the University of Wisconsin – Madison scientific community by patenting the discoveries of UW – Madison researchers and licensing these technologies to leading companies in Wisconsin, the United States and worldwide.

Since 1982, a Cougar victory, the rivalry game with UW has been played at Martin Stadium, with the Cougars winning just six of the sixteen Pullman games.

Lake Mendota has been called the most studied lake in the United States, with the UW – Madison Center for limnology resting on its southern bank.

Laramie was chosen as the site, and UW opened there in 1887.

A field rush on October 16, 2010, after a defeat of # 1 Ohio State proved the measures taken after 1993 worked, and only one minor injury took place as UW and Madison Police instead assisted students onto the field in a safe manner and opened up gates onto the field.

Similarly in 2009, locations opened at the UW – Madison, Villanova University, Memorial Union and at UC San Diego.

Originally opened in 1927, the brick venue is home to the UW men's and women's basketball programs, as well as the women's volleyball and gymnastics teams.

The Democratic Party was formed on the initiative of Freedom Union chairman Władysław Frasyniuk, together with the social-democratic economist Jerzy Hausner, until recently a member of the governing post-communist Democratic Left Alliance ( SLD ), and prominent Christian democrat, former UW member Tadeusz Mazowiecki.

On 29 February 2005, Frasyniuk came out with the initiative to merge the UW into a new social-liberal party to be called " the Democrats ", which he presented with Mazowiecki and Jerzy Hausner.

Mazowiecki had left the UW in November 2002 after it had left the conservative and Christian democratic European People's Party in favour of the European Liberal Democrat and Reform Party, and entered coalitions with the social-democratic Democratic Left Alliance and the populist Self-Defence of the Republic of Poland party on the local level.

Also, while the UW was a somewhat elitist party appealing mostly to educated and affluent urban voters, the PD is trying to establish itself as a populist party with a broad appeal, which caters for centrist social-liberals ( Frasyniuk ), pragmatic centrists with leanings toward economic liberalism ( Hausner ) and centrist Christian democrats ( Mazowiecki ).

Initially, St. Jerome's and Waterloo Lutheran were both expected to federate with the new UW, but in the end Waterloo Lutheran chose to remain independent.

Longtime UW band director Bill Bissell also claimed co-creator credit with Weller, suggesting that the wave was devised by both of them prior to the game.

Founded in 1848, University of Wisconsin – Madison is the largest university in the state, and the flagship of the UW System, with a total enrollment of over 41, 000 students, of whom approximately 30, 000 are undergraduates.

The United States Department of Defense defines UW as a broad spectrum of military and paramilitary operations, normally of long duration, predominantly conducted through, with, or by indigenous or surrogate forces who are organized, trained, equipped, supported, and directed in varying degrees by an external source.

In 2006, UW – Milwaukee was ranked as the ninth best “ Saviors of Our Cities ” by the New England Board of Higher Education ( NEBHE ), because of its strong positive contribution of careful strategic planning and thoughtful use of resources that have dramatically strengthened the economy and quality of life of Milwaukee, and was voted by the public as one of the top ten " Gems of Milwaukee ".

With over 40, 000 under-graduates and post-graduates, UW is the largest school in the Pacific Northwest and many of its departments are ranked in the top 10 for research universities in the United States according to the Chronicle of Higher Learning.
