Another prominent alien race is The Watchers, immortal and wise beings who watch over the Marvel Universe and have taken a sacred vow not to intervene in events, though the Watcher assigned to Earth, Uatu, has violated this oath on several occasions.

Others such as Uatu the Watcher, Eon, or the Celestials Ashema and Tiamut are aberrations in the sense of sympathising with and occasionally coming to the defense of humanity.

While the mainstream versions do defeat their counterparts, they are also able to force the Centurion from the timeline, after which Uatu the Watcher tells them he is Kang.

The stories of the inaugural series ( 1977 – 1984 ) feature the alien, Uatu the Watcher as a narrator.

Watts ( whose name recalls " Uatu " and " Watcher ") encounters non-powered versions of Spider-Man, Wolverine, and Daredevil, who face problems similar to their super-powered counterparts from Earth-616.

In the " Superheroes Tonight " segment, Uatu is arrested for " watching " girls in a YWCA locker room.

Yet other characters are capable of breaking the fourth wall and addressing the readers directly, such as the She-Hulk and Deadpool ; and still others, such as the Earth's Watcher, Uatu, is possessed of the ability to see all alternate Earths in the Marvel Universe setting at will, including the real one in which he and all other beings are nothing more than fictional characters ( in some early issues of What If ?, the Watcher actually addressed the reader by showing him which issues of which comics the past exploits of a given character could be found in ).

storyline What If Spider-man had married the Black Cat ?, after Black Cat is accidentally killed by the Paladin, Silver Sable and Spider-Man enter into a romantic relationship due to their shared grief over the loss of their loved ones ; Uatu the Watcher leaves it ambiguous whether this relationship will work out or not.

This made the use of Uatu improbable so the character was phased out to its last appearance in issue # 76.

Uatu soon appears and warns them of the bad thing that will happen if they return to Earth.

In the end of the storyline ( when the judge declares a mistrial ), Uatu appears one last time to show the outcome of the case: Galactus devouring Earth.

The words are spoke in exasperation by Uatu.

Bolstered by treatment with " delta-rays ", Uatu possesses virtual immortality, although he can die by losing the will to live.

The mini-series Marvel 1602 reveals that, although The Fantastic Four # 13 was the first time he broke his oath, the anomalous appearance of Marvel's superheroes more than 300 years early-speculated by Uatu to be the result of the universe trying to create the means to save itself from a temporal anomaly-forced him to severely bend it, communicating with the 1602 version of Doctor Strange prior to the latter's death, his deal with Strange preventing Strange from telling anyone else about the danger facing the world while he lived while allowing him to communicate that knowledge with others after his physical body's demise.

At the end of the series, Uatu returns stating he was pure energy, and thus could not be infected by the virus.

Just like in Earth-616, Uatu finds that he cannot just stand by and watch as his patients ' lives are ruined, and tries to come to their aid., but like his original incarnation, he never acts directly, but inspiring and guiding the heroes.

Moved by Alicia, the Silver Surfer rebelled and joined forces with the Fantastic Four and Uatu to drive Galactus away from Earth.

In a parody issue of What If ?, the entry entitled " Spidey Intellectual Stories " ( a send-up of The Electric Company's Spidey Super Stories ) has Spider-Man defeating the Mad Thinker by debating philosophy, severely boring the observing Uatu the Watcher.

Later, Uatu stood by Gravity's grave, waiting to witness a cosmic destiny.
