* December 6 – After the death of Charles XII on November 30, Ulrika Eleonora becomes Queen of Sweden.

He was succeeded by his sister, Ulrika Eleonora.

He ascended to the throne following the death of his brother-in-law, absolutist Charles XII in the Great Northern War, as his sister and heir Ulrika Eleonora preferred to abdicate from her position as queen regnant after relinquishing most powers to the Riksdag of Sweden.

He married his second wife, Princess Ulrika Eleonora of Sweden, in 1715.

His marriage to Queen Ulrika Eleonora was childless, but he had several children by his mistress, Hedvig Taube.

His second wife, whom he married in 1715, was Ulrika Eleonora, Princess of Sweden, ( 1688 – 1741 ), daughter of Charles XI of Sweden ( 1655 – 1697 ) and of Ulrike Eleonora of Denmark ( 1656 – 1693 ).

Ulrika Eleonora of Sweden

Ulrika Eleonora or Ulrica Eleanor ( 23 January 1688 – 24 November 1741 ), also known as Ulrika Eleonora the Younger, was Queen regnant of Sweden from 5 December 1718 to 29 February 1720, and then Queen consort until her death.

She was the youngest child of King Charles XI and Queen Ulrika Eleonora the Elder and named after her mother.

But Ulrika Eleonora asserted that she was the closest surviving relative of the late king ( the idea of proximity of blood ) and cited the precedent of Queen Christina.

The choice now stood between Ulrika Eleonora and her nephew.

To accomplish this, Ulrika Eleonora had to consent to a new constitution, which greatly limited the power of the monarch.

Ulrika Eleonora was in fact in favour of an absolute monarchy.

Ulrika Eleonora had married for love and was known to be fiercely loyal to Frederick.

Queen Ulrika Eleonora died of smallpox in 1741.

Ulrika Eleonora was interested in jewelry, music, and collected coins.

Early in 1720 Charles XII's sister, Ulrika Eleonora, who had been elected queen of Sweden immediately after his death, was permitted to abdicate in favour of her husband Frederick the prince of Hesse, who was elected king 1720 under the title of Frederick I of Sweden ; and Sweden was, at the same time, converted into the most limited of monarchies.

One of the most memorable film clips, was a spoof of The Naked Chef, with Matt Lucas playing the part of Jamie Oliver, and Ulrika Johnson playing the part of his then wife-to-be Juliette Norton.

He was then granted the title Prince of Sweden, with the style Royal Highness by the estates, and was prince consort there during Ulrika Eleonora's rule as Queen regnant from 1718 until her abdication in 1720.

She was later made the god-mother of Louisa Ulrika of Prussia, who was given the name Ulrika after her.

Ulrika Eleonora's situation began to change after the death of her older sister in 1708.

The Queen Dowager was always mentioned before her in audiences and church blessings, but Ulrika was soft and did not take up the fight.

Ulrika ( the older ) was sickly, and the many child births eventually broke her.

" With the war consuming more than half his life and nearly all his reign, he never married and fathered no children, and was succeeded by his sister Ulrika Eleonora, who in turn was coerced to hand over all substantial powers to the Riksdag of the Estates and opted to surrender the throne to her husband, who became King Frederick I of Sweden.

The third event was in 1758 when Swedenborg visited Queen Louisa Ulrika of Sweden, who asked him to tell her something about her deceased brother Prince Augustus William of Prussia.

The name Ulrike is a Danish version of the name ; in Swedish she is called Ulrika Eleonora den äldre, which in English means Ulrica Eleanor the Elder ), to distinguish her from her daughter, the future queen regnant.

Under the shadow of her mother-in-law, Ulrika Eleonora was never happy or at ease with her life at court.

After his birth, he was placed under the supervision of Hedvig Ulrika De la Gardie, who acted as the governess of the court of the royal children from 1799 until 1803.

Sweden has been ruled by queens regnant on three separate occasions: by Margaret ( 1389 – 1412 ), Christina ( 1632 – 1654 ) and Ulrika Eleonora ( 1718 – 1720 ) respectively.

To honor his accomplishments ( and posthumously, those of his namesake father ) he was ennobled in 1719 by Queen Ulrika Eleanora as a " naturalized nobleman " ( noble family of Rudbeck, nr.
