In the waters of Deception Pass, just east of the present-day Deception Pass Bridge, is a small island known as Ben Ure Island.

Peter Hall also directed the Broadway première, which opened at the Billy Rose Theater in New York on November 16, 1971, starring Robert Shaw, Rosemary Harris and Mary Ure ; and a year later, the German language premiére of the play at the Burgtheater in Vienna, with Maximilian Schell, Erika Pluhar and Anna-Marie Duringer.

Sting also led an impromptu super-group of other musicians ( dubbed The Secret Police ) performing at the show including Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Phil Collins, Donovan, Bob Geldof and Midge Ure in the show's grand finale – Sting's own reggae-tinged arrangement of Bob Dylan's I Shall Be Released.

Ure and his partner Lawrence " Pirate " Kelly were quite profitable at their smuggling business and played hide-and-seek with the United States Customs Department for years.

Ure's own operation at Deception Pass in the late 1880s consisted of Ure and his Native-American wife.

For transport, Ure would tie the illegal immigrants up in burlap bags so that if customs agents were to approach then he could easily toss the bags overboard.

Included in the park are ten islands: Northwest Island, Deception Island, Pass Island, Strawberry, Ben Ure, Kiket, Skagit, Hope, and Big and Little Deadman Islands.

The band and chorus included Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Phil Collins, Bob Geldof and Midge Ure, all of whom except Beck later worked together on Live Aid.

The event was the first time that Sting had worked with Geldof, Collins and Ure – an association that developed further with 1984's Band Aid and 1985's Live Aid.

Ure took Geldof's lyrics, and created the melody and backing track for the record.

An added bonus, " One Year On " ( a statement from Geldof and Ure on the telephone ) was available as a b-side.

The event was organized by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to raise funds for relief of the ongoing Ethiopian famine.

Music promoter Harvey Goldsmith was also instrumental in bringing the plans of Geldof and Ure to fruition.

Originally founded in 1145 at Fors in Wensleydale, it was moved ten years later to a site a few miles away on the banks of the River Ure.

The band also worked on the Band Aid single at the end of 1984, with Gregory supplying vocals alongside Midge Ure and Sting, after a personal request from Ure that he attend.
