VW announced the end of production in June 2003, citing decreasing demand, and the final original Type 1 VW Beetle ( No. 21, 529, 464 ) rolled off the production line at Puebla, Mexico, on 30 July 2003 – 65 years after its original launch and unprecedented 58-year production run ( counting from 1945, the year VW recognizes as the first year of non-Nazi funded production ).

The Volkswagen Beetle, officially called the Volkswagen Type 1 ( or informally the Volkswagen Bug ), is an economy car produced by the German auto maker Volkswagen ( VW ) from 1938 until 2003.
Their famous " pop-top " package was added later, and became very popular on the second-generation VW Bus from 1968 to 1979, its successor the Vanagon, and then the T4 EuroVan, which was discontinued in 2003.
The Chevette was probably the last rear-wheel drive FR subcompact built in the world ( produced until 1998 in Colombia ; the VW Beetle was built in Mexico until 2003 but it had a different layout, namely rear-wheel drive, rear engine ) until BMW launched its 1 Series in 2004.

Volkswagen ( abbreviated VW ) is a German automobile manufacturer and the original and biggest-selling marque of the Volkswagen Group.
While the original Panda never gained the kind of cult following that similar cars such as the 2CV and VW Beetle enjoy, it nonetheless engendered strong feelings of attachment among many owners for its robustness, affordability, simplicity and flexibility.
Launched as the " VW 1500 Karmann Ghia Coupé " but informally known as " Der Große Karmann " (" the big Karmann ") in Germany, the Type 34 Karmann Ghia was a larger, restyled development of the original Type 14 Karmann Ghia based on the Type 3 platform.
Examples include the original VW Beetle, Renault Twingo and Jeep Liberty.
The New Beetle is related to the original only in name and appearance ( including the absence of a car emblem script with the exception of the VW logo ).

However the original Sand Scorcher edition of the body can be identified by the wider fenders, the separate door handles and the words " 1 / 10 RC VW BUGGY " moulded into the inside of the roof.

There had been several unsuccessful attempts to replace or supplement the Beetle in the VW product line throughout the 1960s ; the Type 3, Type 4, and the NSU-based K70 were all less successful than the Beetle, though aimed at more upscale markets for which VW lacked credibility.
The low price ; robustness of the front suspension ; and the sizable quantity of spare parts from other VW Beetles and Type 2 ( Microbus ) are a further advantage.
The VW Type 2, Type 3 and Type 4 do not make good donor cars: however, the engine, transaxle, wheels, and instruments can be used from these models.
VW resurrected the basic Kübelwagen design several decades after the war as the 1969 Type 181, developed for the German Federal Armed Forces and later also produced for the civilian market known as " Thing " in the US, " Trekker " in the UK and " Safari " in Mexico.

The VW Type 128 and 166 Schwimmwagen ( literally Floating / Swimming Car ) were amphibious four-wheel drive off-roaders, used extensively by the German Wehrmacht and the Waffen-SS during the Second World War.
