Gustavus Adolphus was born in Stockholm as the oldest son of Duke Charles of the Vasa dynasty and his second wife, Christina of Holstein-Gottorp.

In 1611, John Sigismund traveled from Köningsberg to Warsaw, where on 16 November 1611 he gave feudal homage to Sigismund III Vasa, King of Poland ( the Duchy of Prussia was a Polish fief at the time ).

While independence was being reclaimed, the election of King Gustav of the Vasa at Strängnäs on June 6, 1523, has been seen as a formal declaration of independence, and as the de facto end of a union that had lost all long-term support in Sweden.

The day Gustav Vasa was hailed as King ( he was not crowned until 1528 though ) would become, in 1983, the National Day of Sweden.

It was salvaged in 1961 and is now on permanent display at the Vasa Museum in Stockholm.

Salt water provides for greater organic activity than freshwater, and in particular, the shipworm, terredo navalis, lives only in salt water, so some of the best preservation in the absence of sediments has been found in the cold, dark waters of the Great Lakes in North America and in the ( low salinity ) Baltic Sea ( where the Vasa was preserved ).

His determined Prussian wife showed a strong dislike for this Swedish suitor, because Prussia was a Polish fief and the Polish King Sigismund III Vasa still resented his loss of Sweden to Gustavus Adolphus ' father Charles IX.

In a widely-publicided prank by the students of the Helsinki University of Technology, a miniature copy of the statue was discovered from the 300-year-old wreck of the Swedish war ship Vasa when it was lifted from the bottom of the sea in 1961.

While Swedish spelling was an entirely personal business in the Catholic Middle Ages, its gradual standardization ( known as Modern Swedish ) started in 1526 with the translation of the New testament of the Bible ( Gustav Vasa Bible ), as part of the Lutheran reformation.

When King Gustav Vasa finally besieged and conquered the city three years later, an event which ended the Kalmar Union and the Swedish Middle Ages, he noted every second building in the city was abandoned.

Gustav Vasa was a son of Erik Johansson, one of the victims of the executions.

The turbulent period of the reformation of King Gustavus Vasa resulted in a drop in the already relatively insignificant number of students in Uppsala, which was seen as a center of Catholicism and of potential disloyalty to the Crown.

The Catholic bishops had supported the Danish King Christian II, but he was overthrown by Gustavus Vasa ( 1490 – 1560 ), and Sweden ( with Finland ) was now independent again.

However, the rule of an ultra-Catholic King Sigismund III Vasa was marked by numerous attempts to spread the Catholicism, mostly through his support for counterreformation and the Jesuits.

Gustav I of Sweden, born Gustav Eriksson of the Vasa noble family and later known as Gustav Vasa ( 12 May 1496 – 29 September 1560 ), was King of Sweden from 1523 until his death, previously self-recognised Protector of the Realm ( Rikshövitsman ) from 1521, during the ongoing Swedish War of Liberation against King Christian II of Norway, Denmark and Sweden.

Initially of low standing, Gustav rose to lead the rebel movement following the bloodbath in which his father was executed, and his election as King on June 6, 1523 ( currently recognised as the National holiday of Sweden ) and his triumphant entry into Stockholm eleven days later meant the end of Medieval Sweden's elective monarchy as well as the Kalmar Union, which had united the Nordic kingdoms since 1397, and the commencing of a hereditary monarchy under the House of Vasa which, currently under the House of Bernadotte, continues to date.

Gustav Eriksson, a son of Cecilia Månsdotter Eka and Erik Johansson Vasa, was probably born in 1496.

According to genealogical research, Birgitta Gustafsdotter and Sten Sture ( and consequently also Gustav Vasa ) were descended from King Sverker II of Sweden, through King Sverker's granddaughter Benedikte Sunesdotter ( who was married to Svantepolk Knutsson, son of Duke of Reval ).

The Viipuri castle was ruled by a German count, Johann, who had served the king of Sweden, Gustav Vasa.

While the Commonwealth Sejm managed to thwart many of the plans of Sigismund ( and later of his son, Wladislaw ), the Vasa dynasty nonetheless succeeded in partially drawing the Commonwealth into the Thirty Years ' War.

King Gustav Vasa of Sweden sent two separate armies to ravage Halland and Skåne into submission.

In the first half of the 17th century, kings of the House of Vasa turned the Jasna Góra Monastery into a modern Dutch-style fortress, which was one of the pockets of Polish resistance against the Swedish armies during Swedish invasion of Poland in 1655 ( for more information, see Siege of Jasna Góra ).

It was partly because of the fear of war with France that the Royal Navy converted several old 74-gun ships of the line into 60-gun steam-powered blockships, Today the Vasa Museum is the most visited museum in Sweden.

By 1885 12 new families had moved into the settlement and it was decided that they would change the name to “ Vasa ” in honor of the Swedish king Gustaf Vasa.

Many of the Prussian Junkers were opposed to rule by the House of Hohenzollern of Berlin and appealed to Sigismund III Vasa for redress, or even incorporation of Ducal Prussia into the Polish kingdom, although without success.

John II Vasa found an ally in Leopold I of Habsburg, whose armies crossed into Poland – Lithuania from the southwest.

Thereupon, Brandenburg actively participated in the war on the Swedish side, prompting John II Casimir Vasa to state that while his Tartars already had the Swedes for breakfest, he would now take Frederick William I into custody, where neither sun nor moon would shine.

Although remaining untitled, the girl was accepted into the nobility, and eventually became mistress of the Queen Mother's Household ( Hovmästarinna ) as well as her grandmother's companion under the name " Elisabeth Gyllenhielm ", that surname having become traditional for children of Vasa kings and princes born outside of dynastic marriage.

Sweden's involvement into the Russian affairs gave Sigismund III Vasa a pretext to declare war on Russia.

He came into conflict with king Jan II Kazimierz Vasa when he found out that his wife, Elzbieta Sluszka was the Kings femme fatale.

Possession of the Duchy of Lithuania Tulchin came into the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1569 as royal town and only in 1609 king Sigismund III Vasa granted the town to Walenty Aleksander Kalinowski, Kalinowa coat of arms.

Along with Olaus Petri and his brother Laurentius, Andreae completed the full translation of the Bible into Swedish, known as the " Gustav Vasa Bible " of 1541.

In the streets nearby and in the Vasa park clashes between police and protesters occurred that turned into riots.

In 1837 he was awarded a Gold Medal by the Swedish Academy and was inducted into the Order of Vasa, for service to the state and society.

This medieval custom survived into the period of the Vasa dynasty as well, for Eric XIV is known to have bestowed an Order of the Lamb of God at his coronation in 1561.

The name " Bassein " is the English version of the Portuguese " Baçaim " ( with the " ç " spoken as " s " and with the " m " silent ), itself a version of an apparently native name that may have a connection to the Vasa Konkani tribals of the North Konkan region, extending from Mumbai into " South Gujarat.

Gustav Vasa expanded the castle's defensive measures, while his son John III of Sweden later rebuilt and improved the castle aesthetically, turning it into a renaissance style castle and adding a castle church.

He showed his newly acquired fidelity to the House of Vasa by a new genealogic work and by translating into Latin a number of writings against Sigismund of Poland ( King Charles ' brother ).
