Clay County is coextensive with the Vermillion Micropolitan Statistical Area.

* University of South Dakota-In 1862 the territorial legislature located the State University in Vermillion, but nothing was done until 1882 when Clay County voted $ 10, 000 in bonds to construct a building on their campus.

These include Pike County, Illinois and Pike County, Missouri, Vermilion County, Illinois and Vermillion County, Indiana, Sabine County, Texas and Sabine Parish, Louisiana ; Bristol County, Massachusetts and Bristol County, Rhode Island ; Kent County, Maryland and Kent County, Delaware ; and Union County, Arkansas and Union Parish, Louisiana.

Elevations in the county range from above sea level where the Wabash River enters Vermillion County to in northeastern Prairie Township.

To the north of Vigo County, the Wabash River defines the boundary between Vermillion and Parke counties ; the river then enters Vigo County and winds to the south-southwest, defining the southern portion of the county's western border before continuing south along Sullivan County's western border.

Vermillion County lies in the western part of the U. S. state of Indiana between the Illinois border and the Wabash River.

Vigo County was formed in 1818 and included the area that later became Parke and Vermillion counties.

The county's western border is defined by the Wabash River ; on the west side of the river lies Vermillion County, beyond which is the state of Illinois, less than from Parke County's northwestern corner.

Organized in 1870 from parts of Calcasieu and Vermillion Parishes, Cameron is named for Simon Cameron, a Pennsylvanian who was President Abraham Lincoln's first secretary of war.

The name comes from James McHenry, an early settler of Vermillion, South Dakota.

The Vermillion River, for which the county was named, enters from Illinois to the west and crosses the county to empty into the Wabash River near Cayuga.

CSX Transportation operates a railroad line running from Danville, Illinois to Terre Haute ; this line runs most of the length of Vermillion County from north to south, passing through Rilesyburg, Cayuga, and Clinton before crossing the Wabash River.

U. S. Route 36 passes through the middle of the county, entering from Vermillion County to the west, going through Montezuma on the county's western border, then on through Rockville and into Putnam County to the east.

On 30 September 1790, Major Hamtramck led 350 men from Vincennes as far north as the Vermillion River, to engage some of the Indian villages which had been at war with Vincennes.

It was later renamed after the village of Cayuga and Cayuga Lake in the state of New York ; an early settler named John Groenendyke had originally come from Cayuga County, New York and moved to Vigo County in 1818, then in 1819 moved to the area that later became Vermillion County.

Vermillion is located approximately from the proposed site of a Hyperion oil refinery ( formerly known as the Gorilla Project ), which will be one

degree in Political Science from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion in 1964.

However, the only other areas of the state with a clear signal from an educational station were the southwest ( from Nebraska ETV's KYNE-TV in Omaha ) and the northwest ( from South Dakota ETV's KUSD-TV in Vermillion ).

The park takes its name from the Kootenay River, one of the two major rivers which flow through the park, the other being the Vermillion River.
