The first fully armored one was the " Motor War Car " designed by Vickers in England in 1902.

Some of the first such " fighters " belonged to the " gunbus " series of experimental gun carriers of the British Vickers company that culminated in the Vickers F. B. 5 Gunbus of 1914.

* 1959 – The first flight of the Vickers Vanguard.

Wanting to progress further, in 1965 he joined The Rockin ' Vickers who signed a deal with CBS, released three singles and toured Europe, reportedly being the first British band to visit Yugoslavia.

He won the seat for Labour for the first time, holding it until his surprise defeat by Dame Joan Vickers at the 1955 general election.

The most famous story, first published in a collection called Break of Dark, is titled Blackham's Wimpy, the name of a Vickers Wellington Bomber featured in the story, whose nickname comes from the character J. Wellington Wimpy from the Popeye comics and cartoons ( the Wellington was named for Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, victor over Napoleon ).

The Dart-powered Vickers Viscount was the first turboprop aircraft of any kind to go into production and sold in large numbers.

Vickers produced their first armour plate in 1888 and their first artillery piece in 1890.

The bombers, whose names all started with the letter " V " and which were known collectively as the V-class, were the Vickers Valiant ( first flew 1951, entered service 1955 ), Avro Vulcan ( first flew 1952, in service 1956 ) and Handley Page Victor ( first flew 1952, in service 1958 ).

* June 14 – 15 – A Vickers Vimy piloted by John Alcock DSC with navigator Arthur Whitten Brown makes the first nonstop transatlantic flight, from St. John's, Newfoundland, to Clifden, Connemara, Ireland.

** Giuseppe Verdi's opera Otello makes its first appearance on Live from the Met, in a complete production of the opera starring Jon Vickers.

Turbojet engines were trialled on piston engine airframes, such as the Avro Lancastrian and the Vickers VC. 1 Viking, the latter becoming the first jet engine passenger aircraft in April 1948.

* Vickers Viscount – the first turboprop airliner to enter service

In 1960 it was improved with a 3, 240 m runway, long enough to accommodate the first generation of intercontinental jet planes such as the Boeing 707, de Havilland Comet, Vickers VC10, Convair 990, and Douglas DC-8, and received its first international flight.

During the first half of the twentieth century, Potwin enjoyed the prosperity of the Vickers Oil Refinery.

The first recorded business, an ordinary ( a combined store and inn ), was established by Abraham Vickers in 1799.

The first passenger-carrying hovercraft to enter service was the Vickers VA-3, which in the summer of 1962 carried passengers regularly along the north Wales Coast from Moreton, Merseyside, to Rhyl.

The first purpose-designed fighter aircraft included the British Vickers F. B. 5-machine gun armament was also fitted to several French types, such as the Morane-Saulnier L and N. Initially the German Air Service lagged behind the Allies in this respect with no purpose built fighting aircraft.

Vickers opened a flying school on 20 January 1912 and among its first instructors were R. Harold Barnwell and Archie Knight ; 77 pupils including Hugh Dowding were taught to fly until the school closed in August 1914.

At the last of these milestones, Vickers was to have met 11 key criteria for the tank's design.

He accepted the position, resigning from Guthrie and Co on 31 March 1926, and embarked for Calcutta on 10 June accompanied by his wife, Gladys ( née Tyler ), whom he had met when, as an employee of Vickers Ltd., he had lived with his mother next door to the Tyler family in Bexley Heath.

It met immediate opposition from the industries, including from Labour politician and Vickers Chairman Lord Robens

On 30 November 2009, Williams ' hairdresser Aaron Vickers was found dead in woodland near to Williams ' then home in Wiltshire.

When Williams bought the £ 8. 5 million mansion in early 2009, Vickers lived at the estate for some months but had recently moved back in with his mother who lives nearby.

Additionally, she has written a lead track for Louis Walsh's new girl band, Wonderland, released 6 June 2011, tracks for Diana Vickers and has written a catalogue of songs with the likes of Guy Chambers ( of Robbie Williams fame ), Fernando Garibay ( Lady Gaga co-writer ) and many others in the UK and US.

* 1957 – Vickers Viscount G-AOHP of British European Airways crashes at Ballerup after the failure of three engines on approach to Copenhagen Airport.

In 1928 the Aviation Department became Vickers ( Aviation ) Ltd and soon after acquired Supermarine, which became the " Supermarine Aviation Works ( Vickers ) Ltd ".

Rhodesian counterinsurgency operation extended into Zambia after ZIPRA rebels shot down two unarmed Vickers Viscount civilian airliners ( Air Rhodesia Flight 825 on 3 September 1978 and Air Rhodesia Flight 827 on 12 February 1979 ) with Soviet supplied SAM-7 heat-seeking missiles.

It is believed the aircraft had handling problems for it was not delivered to Martlesham Heath until early in 1936, long after the competition had been decided in favour of the Vickers Type 253.

The town of Sacramento was originally named Cross Roads, but after returning from the California Gold Rush ( presumably having spent time in Sacramento, CA ), John Vickers suggested changing the name to Sacramento.

Built towards the end of World War 2 as a flight test airfield for the Vickers aircraft factory at nearby Brooklands, it opened in 1944 and after extended use for the development of military aircraft during the Cold War, it finally closed in 1972.

In World War II, after the Vickers-Armstrongs aircraft factory at Brooklands was badly bombed by the Luftwaffe on 4 September 1940, with heavy loss of life and many more injured, the Vickers Experimental Department was quickly dispersed to secret premises on the Silvermere and Foxwarren Park estates along Redhill Road.

Having been dispersed with the Design Office from Brooklands to the nearby Burhill Golf Club in Hersham, a few minutes up the road from his house in Hersham, after the Vickers factory was badly bombed in September 1940, Wallis returned to Brooklands in November 1945 as Head of the Vickers-Armstrongs Research & Development Department and was based in the former motor circuit ’ s 1907 Clubhouse.

* On 1 May 1957 Vickers VC. 1 Viking – G-AJBO operated by Eagle Aviation Limited crashed after engine failure near the airport, five crew and 29 passengers died.

* July 17 – A Vickers Viscount of charter airline Alidair lands safely in Devon, England, after suffering damage to all four engines.

* April 2 – A Royal Air Force Vickers VC-10 sets a new record time between the United Kingdom and Australia, landing in Perth, Australia, after a flight of 16 hours 1 minute.

Finally, the company was absorbed into the mother Vickers company, leading first to the Maxim-Vickers gun and then, after Vickers ' redesign, the Vickers machine gun.

Their improved development of the Maxim gun design, the Vickers machine gun, after Maxim's resignation from the board in 1911 on his 71st birthday, was the standard British machine gun for many years.

Soon after it opened, the sheltered private location attracted early aviators and aeroplane designers such as Roe and Sopwith and the centre of the track soon became one of Britain's first aerodromes and later played a major part in aviation worldwide during much of the 20th century, most notably with the British Aerospace, British Aircraft Corporation, Hawker, Sopwith and Vickers aircraft companies.

* On 6 January 1948, Vickers Viking G-AHPK crashed at Ruislip on approach to RAF Northolt after flying into trees in low visibility killing the pilot and injuring 8 others.

* On 13 April 1950, Vickers Viking G-AIVL was on a flight from RAF Northolt to Paris over the English Channel near Hastings when a French passenger was suspected of making a suicide attempt after a bomb exploded in the rear toilet compartment, tearing a hole tall by wide in the fuselage.

* On 31 October 1950, Vickers Viking G-AHPN crashed in bad weather at RAF Northolt after the aircraft struck the runway and went off the end of the runway and caught fire killing 28 out of 30 passengers and crew

* On 23 October 1957, Vickers Viscount G-AOJA on a flight from London Heathrow Airport crashed after overshooting on approach to Belfast Nutts Corner Airport.

* On 19 November 1957, Vickers Viscount G-AOHP crashed at Ballerup, Denmark, after the failure of three engines on approach to Copenhagen Airport.

* On 5 January 1960, Vickers Viscount G-AMNY was damaged beyond economic repair at Luqa Airport, Malta, when it departed the runway after landing following a loss of hydraulic pressure.
