Vimes was educated at a dame school, where he was once blackboard monitor for a whole term, before he had to drop out and concentrate on learning about life out on the streets.

Vimes has once been described as a speciesist, though only from an " old school " mindset.

Vimes ' involvement in preventing a pointless war with Klatch in the novel Jingo led to his being once more rewarded with an unwanted title, in this case, Duke of Ankh.

His father was abusive, and broke his leg at least once ( Vimes notes in Night Watch that Nobby used to have his arms broken by his father too — and in Hogfather, Nobby claims that he never got anything in his stocking ... except once, when his father vomited into it ).

He was apparently inspired to join the Watch after meeting with Sergeant-At-Arms John Keel ( and alternatively, due to time travel, Sam Vimes ), who once gave him a spoon ( which his father subsequently stole upon being released from prison ).

His mum told him that the man had been run over by a cart, but Vimes suspected that if this were true at all, then it was probably a brewer's cart, which had ' run him over ' a bit at a time for years.

At one point Death notes that if Vimes is having a ' near-Death ' experience, Death is also forced to have a ' near Vimes ' experience ( as of Thud!

On rare occasions, Sam Vimes has been described as completely happy, even if it's only for a brief period ; such occasions include alone time with his wife, the birth of his son, and whenever a case has reached a satisfactory conclusion.

In essence, this amounts to Carrot Ironfoundersson and Samuel Vimes, respectively the captain and commander of the City Watch, and hence used to keeping Vetinari alive – on the grounds that they would be ' on top of the pile ' if the city collapsed, as the city's rightful heir to the throne and the highest ranking noble respectively.

While not as cynical as Commander Samuel Vimes, she balances out Carrot's naïveté ( although she occasionally wonders if he's really as innocent as he appears ).

It was said that if Vimes looked deep into Carcer's eyes, he could see the demons looking back.

Arriving at Gebra they discover that Carrot has convinced the two armies to get together and play a game of football ( he has an inflatable football in his backpack for just such an emergency ), Vimes is preparing to arrest the Klatchian Prince and Lord Rust for various breaches of the peace ( such as being prepared for war ) and 71-hour Ahmed is supporting him.

Vimes is implied to heavily resemble his ancestor and they share a nickname: Old Stoneface.

Vimes took a great interest in the restructuring of the Watch, placing new Watch Houses where they were needed and supervising the creation of both a Watch Academy and a forensics section.

Although widely differing characters, Vimes and Vetinari can be called similar in that they both have very cynical worldviews, but fairly idealistic aims.

Dwarfish courtship is an incredibly tactful affair, primarily concerned with finding out which gender the other dwarf is ( this may have been retconned by the time of the novel, ' Thud ', where it is stated that Samuel Vimes, a human, has picked up a knack for judging the gender of dwarfs, making it likely that they are able to tell amongst themselves ).

Trolls normally express themselves in a very physical way, and according to Samuel Vimes, trollish is " basically body language, and they like to shout ".

Several policemen ( the ones who died when the barricade fell in the original timeline ) are killed in the battle as is Reg Shoe ; Vimes manages to fight off the attack until he can grab Carcer, at which point they are returned to the future and Keel's body is placed in the timeline Vimes has just left, to tie things up, as in the " real " history, Keel died in that fight.

Under Sam Vimes, the Watch has become a real force in the city and both the force, and its Commander, have become targets for those they annoy.

Although Sam Vimes and the ship's captain see the sense of this, they can't believe that someone in love could be so sensible.

Nothing is known of Istanzia, although it is a state big enough to send an Ambassador to Ankh-Morpork for Commander Vimes to frighten: when in The Fifth Elephant the Istanzian forces were reported to be making repeated armed incursions across the Slipnir river, Vimes's offer to arrange for the Istanzian Ambassador to "... go home in an ambulance " resulted in the Istanzian forces pulling back so far that they were "... nearly in the next country.

In Snuff, as Vimes and Willikins go for walk in the countryside, they " navigate their way around the ha-ha, keep their distance from the ho-ho and completely ignore the he-he.

As a parting shot, they send a squad of their guards to invade the Vimes / Ramkin family mansion and attempt to murder Lady Sybil Ramkin and Young Sam.

In addition, Vimes ' office at Pseudopolis Yard has " everything that his ingenuity could devise ", including sharp ornamental railings, " which are pretty, and make the house look nice, but are, above all, spiky.

In Jingo, Lord Vetinari gives Sam Vimes the title of Duke, something only a King can do, while Carrot is present — Vetinari goes so far as to say that he " had been reminded " that Vimes could have that title.

On the other hand, the Nobbses have stolen so much stuff over the years that, as Vimes has said, " you could probably prove Nobby was the Dowager Duchess of Quirm.

His mother would go on to tell young Sam that his father was ' run down by a cart when he was crossing the street ': He privately reckons later that his father was a drunk: Vimes had never known his father.

Indeed, he fled the offer at a dead run, all the time terrified Vimes would " go spare ".

Flint was briefly elevated to sergeant under the tenure of Acting-Captain Fred Colon ( promoted to run the watch during the temporary resignations of Carrot and Angua while Vimes, Littlebottom and Detritus were serving as ambassadors to Uberwald in The Fifth Elephant ), much to the annoyance of Nobby Nobbs, who had been obviously gunning for the promotion himself.

Vimes is all-but-shocked at Vetinari's disturbingly cynical ( and probably disturbingly accurate ) view of the world, he in turn has been called " the most cynical bastard that ever walked under the sun " ( in Going Postal ).

Though he finds being affectionate in public embarrassing and is divided on disliking Sybil's status as a noble, it is clear that Vimes loves his wife dearly ; indeed when he was trapped in the past alone in a world he no longer recognised, the History Monks gave him a silver cigar case his wife had bought him to inspire him to continue with his mission.

The Discworld characters are drawn in the same style as Vimes and Young Sam, but the pastel animals are still present, and all three settings ( the world of Where's My Cow ?, the streets of Ankh-Morpork, and Young Sam's nursery ) begin blurring together.

Vimes then recruits the Watch into his own private army regiment, reasoning that, as an official noble, he is entitled to do so by law and by Lord Rust's command, with the group remaining independent as knights legally fall under command of the king or his duly-appointed representatives, neither of which exist in Ankh-Morpork.

Most of his officers rationalize his bias as simply not being particularly fond of anyone ; initially, Vimes is jokingly described as fond of rural dwarfs and wizards, primarily because most do not cause crimes relevant to him.

Nobby proved less tractable than the conspirators had expected, turning down a cushy life as figurehead ruler of Ankh-Morpork largely, by his own account, for fear of what Vimes would have to say — or more importantly, do — when he found out given his and his infamous ancestor's opinions on royalty.

During his time in the watch, Fred Colon has earned the right to address Vimes on a first-name basis ; according to Vimes, however, Colon only ever does so when a situation has him extremely worried.

The rules of Assassination are so utterly formalised and strict that anyone with a strategic mind, a decent budget, and a firm knowledge of their code can usually avoid death at their hands, as Commander of the City Watch Sam Vimes has proved many times.
