Virgil was seen as the pinnacle of Latin literature, and Latin was the dominant literary language of England at the time, therefore making Virgilian influence highly likely.

However, it is clear he was familiar with the works of Virgil and with Pliny the Elder's Natural History, and his monastery also owned copies of the works of Dionysius Exiguus.

Virgil is credited in the Eclogues with establishing Arcadia as a poetic ideal that still resonates in Western literature and visual arts and setting the stage for the development of Latin pastoral by Calpurnius Siculus, Nemesianus, and later writers.

Virgil seems to have made connections with many of the other leading literary figures of the time, including Horace, in whose poetry he is often mentioned, and Varius Rufus, who later helped finish the Aeneid.

With the Georgics Virgil is again credited with laying the foundations for later didactic poetry.

Virgil and Ellen had a daughter, Nellie Jane Earp ( January 7, 1862 – June 17, 1930 ).

In the summer of 1863, Ellen was told by her parents and by the Earps that Virgil had died in Tennessee and she left Pella with her parents and daughter for the Oregon Territory.

After returning from the Civil War as a young man, his wife Ellen and daughter Nellie had disappeared, having been told that Virgil had been killed in the war.

The next year, encouraged by his wife, Virgil traveled to Portland, Oregon where he was reunited with Ellen and Nellie Jane Law.
