In 1602, the Spanish began to show interest in California and sent Sebastián Vizcaíno, a pearl fisher, to explore the area.

The club also had some young assets: a pair of 22-year-olds Francisco Villarroya and Juan Vizcaíno who were well on their way to becoming future Spanish internationals as well as eccentric Paraguayan goalie José Luis Chilavert who came to the club from Argentina's San Lorenzo the same summer Antić did.

AMORC scholars have suggested that Rosicrucians first came to America in the area of present day Carmel-by-the-Sea, California in The Vizcaíno Expedition of 1602 – 1603.

Because of an error by Vizcaíno in determining the latitude of the San Diego Harbor one hundred and sixty-seven years earlier, the ships passed by it and landed first near present day Los Angeles before finding their way back.

But fog obscured the shoreline, making the waters of the large, open Monterey Bay look like open ocean, and they failed to discern the coastline's semi-circular shape, described by Vizcaíno as round like an " O ", even though members of the party had twice marched along its beach.

Having recognized the bay, a Mass was conducted near the oak tree that the Franciscan missionaries with Vizcaíno had worshiped under in 1603, and possession was officially taken.

In January 2007, the Yankees traded Johnson back to the Diamondbacks, almost two years to the day that Arizona had traded him to New York, for a package of Luis Vizcaíno, Alberto González, Steven Jackson, and Ross Ohlendorf.

The point remains undeveloped, much as Sebastián Vizcaíno saw it from his passing ship in 1603.

Traveling with him were Father Juan González Vizcaíno and Father Francisco Palóu.

Father Palóu wrote of Father Vizcaíno ’ s visit to the Santa Cruz village of Xaxas that the missionaries on ship went ashore and “ they were well received by the heathen and presented with fish, in return for which the Indians were given some strings of beads .” The island was considered for establishment of a Catholic mission to serve the large Chumash population.

In 1596 Sebastián Vizcaíno arrived, giving the area its modern name, La Paz.

In 1602, Captain Sebastián Vizcaíno dropped anchor at Santa Catalina Island and near San Pedro.

The first European settlers to the area of Daphne came in 1540 during the period of Spanish Exploration.

Similar Spanish fortifications of the 17th-18th centuries can be seen in Cuba, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Veracruz and Acapulco, Mexico, Portobelo and Panama City, Panamá, and many other Latin American locations which were governed as part of the Spanish Empire during the Age of Exploration.

After the arrest of a Spanish fishing vessel by the Royal Gibraltar Police in 1998, the problem largely subsided, although the operation of Odyssey Marine Exploration in the area is currently being contested in the Florida Court.
