Vlad the Monk was a contender to his brother's throne as ruler of the principality of Wallachia for many years, but he took no active part in fighting for the throne until near the end of Vlad III's lifetime.

They are: Elisabeta of Transylvania ( from Bram Stoker's Dracula ), 1448 – 1462 ; Ilona Szilagy ( Vlad III's real-life second wife ), 1466 – 1476 ; Marguerite Chopin of Courtempierre ( from Vampyr ), 1709 – 1711 ; Queen Victoria, 1886 – 1888 ; and Sari Gábor, 1948-1949.

Another youth Mehmed found attractive, and who was presumably more accommodating, was Radu III the Fair, the brother of the famous Vlad the Impaler, “ Radu, a hostage in Istanbul whose good looks had caught the Sultan ’ s fancy, and who was thus singled out to serve as one of his most favored pages .” After the defeat of Vlad, Mehmed placed Radu on the throne of Wallachia as a vassal ruler.

In Dracula: Prince of Many Faces, by Raymond T. McNally and Radu Florescu, it is claimed that Mehmed wanted to reconquer Belgrade in order to gain access to Hungary through the Danube River but was prevented from doing so by a humiliating defeat by Vlad III at The Night Attack.

* 1462: Mehmed the Conqueror is driven back by Wallachian prince Vlad III Dracula at The Night Attack.

* November 26 – Vlad III the Impaler manages to become reigning Prince of Wallachia for the third and last time, before later being killed by the Ottoman Turks at the Battle of Bucharest.

* In 1986, Steven Brust was a Guest of Honor at the Per Ardua Ad Astra science fiction convention in Toronto, and he contributed the Vlad Taltos short story " A Dream of Passion " to the convention chapbook.

During the Wars of the Roses, John Tiptoft, 1st Earl of Worcester, having witnessed this form of execution in Vlad the Impaler's Wallachia, notably had thirty men, found guilty of rebellion against King Edward IV, hanged, castrated, then beheaded at Southampton.

After that, he moved to the court of his first cousin Vlad III Dracula and, in 1457, managed to receive 6, 000 horsemen as military assistance, putting them to use in a victorious battle against Petru Aron at Doljești, near Roman.

All of these would at one time or the other rule Wallachia, with Mircea II and Vlad Ţepeş both being able military commanders ( the latter would eventually become one of the most notorious leaders in history, and the inspiration for the novel Dracula by Bram Stoker ).

The Vlad Taltos series is set in a fantastical world of magic, at a time directly following a 1, 000-year interregnum wherein magic was impossible.

Vlad suffered much at the hands of the Ottomans and was locked up in an underground prison ; however, Radu caught the eye of the sultan's son, Mehmet II.

During the first reign of their father, Vlad II Dracul, the Voivode brought his young sons to Târgoviște, the capital of Wallachia at that time.

Vlad Dracula built a church at Târgșor ( allegedly in the memory of his father and older brother who were killed nearby ), and he contributed with money to the Snagov Monastery and to the Comana Monastery fortifications.

Vlad refused, because if he had paid the ' tribute ', as the tax was called at the time, it would have meant a public acceptance of Wallachia as part of the Ottoman Empire.

Commanding at best only 30, 000 to 40, 000 men ( depending of the source ), Vlad was unable to stop the Ottomans from crossing the Danube at June 4, 1462 and entering Wallachia.

A Venetian envoy, upon hearing about the news at the court of Corvinus on 4 March, expressed great joy and said that the whole of Christianity should celebrate Vlad Țepeș's successful campaign.

Vlad was imprisoned at Oratia, a fortress located at Podu Dâmboviței Bridge.

He was killed at the battle of Grimm Moor, by a White Wolf of Middenheim whom Vlad had inducted into his inner circle.

He trained in neurology under Arthur Kreindler and Vlad Voiculescu at the Department of Clinical Neurology of the Institute for Neurological Research of the Romanian Academy of Sciences.

Starting from 1954, Arthur Kreindler, in his double position as director of the Institute of Neurology of the Romanian Academy and head of the post-graduate chair of Neurology at the Bucharest University, surrounded himself with personalities like State Drăgănescu, Theodor Horneţ and Vlad Voiculescu.

While Hunyadi's victory at Belgrade and the lasting legacy of his political decisions ( Vlad III the Impaler and Stephen III both came to power under Hunyadi, and he went to great lengths to have his son Matthias placed on the throne ) rendered the daunting Mehmed II far less of a threat to Christendom, his ultimate dream of a Christian reconquest of Constantinople would never be realized.

Vladimir Konstantinov, known also as " Vladdie " and " Vlad The Impaler " ( for his vicious hits ), was drafted 221st overall in the 1989 NHL Entry Draft by the Detroit Red Wings, after impressing a Red Wings scout at the 1987 World Junior Championships, where a brawl broke out in the Russia / Canada game.

Radu and his well-equipped forces finally besieged Poenari Castle, the famed lair of Vlad III.

* Vlad Draasen-He was a member of Latveria's royalty during the 15th Century.

* Vlad the Impaler ( 1431 – 1476 ), who was beheaded following his assassination.

In addition to its unique architecture, the castle is famous because of persistent myths that it was once the home of Vlad III Dracula.

One famous ruler in this period was Vlad III the Impaler ( also known as Vlad Dracula or ), Prince of Wallachia in 1448, 1456 – 62, and 1476.

An even earlier example of a puppet state ( as well as a vassal state ) is Wallachia, which was partially de facto ruled by the Ottoman Empire from 1462 when Radu the Handsome was placed on the throne after his older brother Vlad III was banished from Wallachia and interned by Hungary.

Ţepeş was a notorious 15th century Wallachian ( Romanian ) warlord, or " Voivode ", also known as Vlad Ţepeş '.

Vlad Dracul, the ruler of Wallachia, the father of the notorious Vlad Dracula, was imprisoned here, as he had fallen into disgrace with Hunyadi, not providing the help promised.

The Wallachian prince Vlad Dracul ( father of Vlad the Impaler ( Dracula ), who lived in exile in the town, let coins to be minted in the city ( otherwise coinage was the monopoly of the Hungarian kings in the Kingdom of Hungary ) and issued the first document listing the city's Romanian name, Sighişoara.

Vladislav ( Vlad ) Nikolayevich Listyev () ( May 10, 1956 – March 1, 1995 ) was a Russian journalist and head of the ORT TV Channel ( now government-owned Channel One ).

Vlad Listyev was arguably the most popular journalist and TV anchor in Russia ( he remains well-remembered years after his death ), and was a key force in bringing the voice of democracy to Russian television.

With short interruptions during the anti-Ottoman rebellions of Vlad III the Impaler and Michael the Brave, destroyed by Iancu Jianu's hajduks in their campaign against Osman Pazvantoğlu and his successor ( 1809 ) and never rebuilt under Turkish rule, Turnu, like the other two kazas, was due to be returned to Wallachia through the 1826 Akkerman Convention-and was ultimately ceded in 1829, through the Treaty of Adrianopole.

Vlad, having numerous mistresses, also fathered several illegitimate children, including another son named Mircea ( the name Mircea being a family favorite due to Vlad's father, Mircea cel Bătrân, a popular Wallachian voivode ).

The connection with " Dracula " is due to a spurious 19th-century tradition which makes Snagov monastery the site of the tomb of Vlad III Dracula.

Vlad II received the surname Dracul in 1431, after being inducted into the Order of the Dragon, founded in 1408 by the King Sigismund of Hungary ( the later Holy Roman Emperor ), as part of a design to gain political favor from the Catholic Church and to aid in protecting Wallachia against the Ottoman Empire.

In this context, Vlad allied himself with Matthias Corvinus, with the hope of keeping the Ottomans out of the country ( Wallachia was claimed as a part of the Ottoman Empire by Sultan Mehmed II ).

Basarab II ruled during a turbulent time in Wallachia, now part of present day Romania, with his rule falling between that of the father and son rule of Vlad Dracul and Mircea II.
