Another youth Mehmed found attractive, and who was presumably more accommodating, was Radu III the Fair, the brother of the famous Vlad the Impaler, “ Radu, a hostage in Istanbul whose good looks had caught the Sultan ’ s fancy, and who was thus singled out to serve as one of his most favored pages .” After the defeat of Vlad, Mehmed placed Radu on the throne of Wallachia as a vassal ruler.

The Wallachian prince Vlad Dracul ( father of Vlad the Impaler ( Dracula ), who lived in exile in the town, let coins to be minted in the city ( otherwise coinage was the monopoly of the Hungarian kings in the Kingdom of Hungary ) and issued the first document listing the city's Romanian name, Sighişoara.

Later writings about the case have led to legendary accounts of the Countess bathing in the blood of virgins to retain her youth and subsequently also to comparisons with Vlad III the Impaler of Wallachia, on whom the fictional Count Dracula is partly based, and to modern nicknames of the Blood Countess and Countess Dracula.

Vlad II received the surname Dracul in 1431, after being inducted into the Order of the Dragon, founded in 1408 by the King Sigismund of Hungary ( the later Holy Roman Emperor ), as part of a design to gain political favor from the Catholic Church and to aid in protecting Wallachia against the Ottoman Empire.

Dragulea, Dragolea, Drăculea is a diminutive of the epithet Dracul " the Dragon " carried by his father Vlad II, who in 1431 was inducted as a member of the Order of the Dragon, a chivalric order founded by Sigismund of Hungary in 1408.

Vlad was born in Sighișoara, Transylvania, Kingdom of Hungary, ( present-day Romania ), in the winter of 1431 to Vlad II Dracul, future voivode of Wallachia.

Vladislav ( Vlad ) Nikolayevich Listyev () ( May 10, 1956 – March 1, 1995 ) was a Russian journalist and head of the ORT TV Channel ( now government-owned Channel One ).

Although the invading troops were defeated somewhere in a rovină (" ragged marshland ") in Oltenia, the chaos created by the threat of attacks allowed a group of boyars to put Vlad I the Usurper ( 1395 – 1397 ) on the throne.

Two decades later, Vlad III the Impaler ( 1448, 1456 – 1462, 1476 ), notorious as the model for the Dracula legend, turned against the Ottoman Empire.
