The crowd and stage in 1969. The concert was originally scheduled to take place in the Mills Industrial Park () in the town of Wallkill, New York, which Woodstock Ventures had leased for $ 10, 000 in the Spring of 1969.

The town's topography is generally level and low, except along parts of its eastern and western boundaries, reflecting the passage of the Wallkill River through it from north to west.

In 1926, the Arthur D. Crane Company along with developer and designer Herbert L. Closs constructed a 600-foot dam across the Wallkill River to form Lake Mohawk in 1928.
