Walpole continued to be an influential figure in the House of Commons.

The resignation of Sunderland and the death of Stanhope in 1721 left Walpole as the most important figure in the administration.

Horace Walpole described Barré as " a black, his hair was black robust man, of a military figure, rather hard-favoured than not, young, with a peculiar distortion on one side of his face, which it seems was a bullet lodged loosely in his cheek, and which gave a savage glare to one eye.

He was in all but name Prime Minister and is sometimes presented as the first Prime Minister of Great Britain, rather than Sir Robert Walpole who is more usually considered as that figure.

* Mrs Delaney, wife of Patrick Delaney, Rector of Irvinestown in the 18th century and later Bishop of Down, was a key figure on the London literary scene prior to her marriage, mixing with Alexander Pope, Edmund Burke, Hugh Walpole and Jonathan Swift.

Carey was, after Namby Pamby, a well-known figure among those opposed to Robert Walpole, and the poem had been praised by Alexander Pope ( as " Sally in our Alley " had been by Joseph Addison ).

The antiquary and engraver George Vertue was a figure in the London art scene for most of the period, and his copious notebooks were adapted and published in the 1760s by Horace Walpole as Some Anecdotes of Painting in England, which remains a principal source for the period.

The Tory ministry of Robert Harley ( 1710 – 1714 ) reportedly spent over 50, 000 pounds sterling on creating and bribing the press ( Butt ); we know this figure because their successors publicized it, but they ( the Walpole government ) were suspected of spending even more.

Walpole required that no minister other than himself have private dealings with the king, and also that when the cabinet had agreed on a policy, all ministers must defend it in public or resign.

For the next 17 years until 1801 ( and again from 1804 to 1806 ), Pitt, the Tory, was Prime Minister in the same sense that Walpole, the Whig, had been earlier.

Pitt was particularly frustrated that, due to the isolationist policies of the Prime Minister, Sir Robert Walpole, Britain had not entered the War of the Polish Succession which broke out in 1733 and he had not been given a chance to test himself in battle.

Cobham had originally been a supporter of the government under Sir Robert Walpole, but a dispute over the controversial Excise Bill of 1733 had seen them join the opposition.

Walpole and Newcastle were now giving the war in Europe, which had recently broken out, a much higher priority than the colonial conflict with Spain in the Americas.

The survey was led by Mr. G. F. Walpole who had already distinguished himself by triangulating the terrain across 500 km from the Nile to Siwa via Bahariya.

Although the position of " Prime Minister " had no recognition in law or official use at the time, Walpole is nevertheless acknowledged as having held the office de facto because of his influence within the Cabinet.

Walpole had planned to become a clergyman but abandoned the idea when, as the eldest surviving son in the family, he became the heir to his father's estate.

On 30 July 1700, Walpole married Catherine Shorter ( died 20 August 1737 ), with whom he later had two daughters and four sons:

* Robert Walpole, 2nd Earl of Orford ( 1701 – 31 March 1751 ), who married Margaret Rolle ( 17 January 1709 – 13 January 1781 ), later the 15th Baroness Clinton, on 26 March 1724 and had one son.

* Mary Walpole ( c. 1705 – 2 January 1732 ), who married the 3rd Earl of Cholmondeley on 14 September 1723 and had two sons.

Sir Edward Walpole ( c. 1706 – 1784 ); he had an illegitimate daughter, Maria Walpole, who later married into the British Royal Family, becoming the wife of Prince William Henry, Duke of Gloucester and Edinburgh, King George III's brother.

They had been living openly together in Richmond, Houghton Hall and London society since about 1724, and she had borne him an illegitimate daughter whom he eventually had ennobled as Lady Maria Walpole.

Walpole developed an intense hatred for Robert Harley ( by then Earl of Oxford and Mortimer ) and Lord Bolingbroke, the Tories who had engineered his impeachment.

Walpole was saved from financial ruin by his banker who had earlier advised him to sell his shares ; other investors, however, were not as fortunate.

The crisis had significantly damaged the credibility of the King and of the Whig Party, but Walpole defended both with skilful oratory in the House of Commons.

This provoked a wave of hostility to Walpole because many saw such an act as unconstitutional — that members of Parliament were being dismissed for their freedom of speech in attacking the government, something protected by Parliamentary privilege.

The conquest of a port in Spain's American empire was widely considered a foregone conclusion by many Patriot Whigs and opposition Tories who pressed a reluctant Walpole to launch larger naval expeditions to the Gulf of Mexico.

She had famous subsequent disagreements with many important people, including her daughter the second Duchess of Marlborough ; the architect of Blenheim Palace, John Vanbrugh ; prime minister Robert Walpole ; King George II ; and his wife, Queen Caroline.

In spite of their dullness many of his works are of considerable value, although Horace Walpole questioned his " parts, taste and judgment.

At the time, the park was on the outskirts of London and remained an isolated area well into the 18th century, when it was known as a haunt of highwaymen and thieves ; Horace Walpole was one of many to be robbed there.

According to the Preface of Catalogue of Greek Coins in the Hunterian Collection ( Macdonald 1899 ), Hunter purchased many important collections, including those of Horace Walpole and the bibliophile Thomas Crofts.

The marriage between Anne Horton and the Duke of Cumberland was described as a “ conquest at Brighthelmstone ” ( now Brighton ) by Mrs. Horton, " who ", Horace Walpole says, " had for many months been dallying with his passion, till she had fixed him to more serious views than he had intended.

Though he stayed with Walpole to the end, Newcastle was later accused by many of Walpole's supporters of undermining him.

He had long conceived the only way Britain could defeat France was in alliance with Austria, a view sharply at odds with many other leading thinkers of the era, including Walpole and Pitt.

Hervey's bitter account of court life and intrigues resembles in many points the memoirs of Horace Walpole, and the two books corroborate one another in many statements that might otherwise have been received with suspicion.

An additional note: Walpole, in Castle, introduces many set-pieces that the Gothic novel will become famous for.

One of the most important landmarks in the late Georgian period was the introduction of many new species of trees and flora from around the world, which Horace Walpole described as giving the " richness and colouring so peculiar to the modern landscape ".

Before Boswell could publish his biography of Johnson, there were many other friends of Johnson's who published or were in the middle of publishing their own biographies or collections or anecdotes on Johnson: John Hawkins, Thrale, Frances Burney, Anna Seward, Elizabeth Montagu, Hannah More, and Horace Walpole among many.

Horace Walpole recorded on 11 October that he did not know Fitzwilliam personally but that " from what I have heard of him in the Lords, I have conceived a good opinion of his sense ; of his character I never heard any ill, which is a great testimonial in his favour, when there are so many horrid characters, and when all that are conspicuous have their minutest actions tortured to depose against them ".

Horace Walpole in his letters makes many jesting allusions to Cambridge in the character of newsmonger.

Frogmore House became known as Great Frogmore and had many tenants, including George FitzRoy, Duke of Northumberland and Edward Walpole, father of the Duchess of Gloucester.

This was the first year the collection was open to the public ( as opposed to just train rides ), and soon the North Walpole site was seen to be too small for the many visitors who came.

He executed busts and funerary monuments of many of the most prominent men of his day, including the monument to Isaac Newton in Westminster Abbey, a statue of Marlborough, and busts of Walpole, Bolingbroke, and Pope.
