* Needles ( and the surrounding area ) was the scene for the hit 1986 post-apocalyptic computer RPG Wasteland.

The Wasteland Speech was a speech given by Federal Communications Commission ( FCC ) chairman Newton N. Minow to the convention of the National Association of Broadcasters on May 9, 1961.

Wasteland was one of the first games featuring a persistent world, where changes to the game world were stored and kept.

Wasteland was first distributed for the Apple II and ported to the Commodore 64 and PC DOS platforms in 1988-it is sometimes ( and erroneously ) listed as being published in 1987, because that year appears on the title screen of the Apple version.

In 2000, Wasteland was ranked as the 24th top PC game of all time by IGN, called " one of the best RPGs to ever grace the PC " and " a truly innovative RPG for its time.

Wasteland was followed in 1990 by a less-successful intended sequel, Fountain of Dreams, set in post-war Florida.

Interplay themselves worked on Meantime, which was based on the Wasteland game engine and the universe but was not a continuation of the story.

The gameplay is very similar to that of Wasteland since Fountain of Dreams was originally intended to be a sequel to Wasteland.

Fountain of Dreams is said to have been a disappointment to Wasteland fans, as it was much shorter and smaller.

Initially, the group was formed in 1987 out of the cover band Lords of the Wasteland which featured Wood, Gossard, Ament and Malfunkshun drummer Regan Hagar.

The window with a listing of characters was featured in 1988's Wasteland ; and the use of an active character to represent the party was part of Ultima V. The reviewer also noted that the design approach for game play was closer to SSI's own Wizard's Crown than to the other games in the genre.

Also, the band was featured in the Tony Hawk's American Wasteland soundtrack when they covered the Descendents songs " Suburban Home " and " I Like Food " together as a medley.

Money Money 2020 was re-mastered and re-released by Reprise Records on November 9, 2004, with two additional tracks, " Hammer of the Gods " and a cover of The Misfits " Teenagers from Mars " which can also be heard on Tony Hawk's American Wasteland while " Roshambo " is on the NHL 2005 soundtrack.

Their eponymous first album was released in 1984, and their final, This Present Wasteland, in 2008.

The band's ninth and final studio album, This Present Wasteland, followed in 2008, which was hailed generally as an effective release consistent with their previous accomplishments.

A major part of the Fallout universe is the military organization Brotherhood of Steel, whose origins are similar to the Desert Rangers and the Guardians of the Old Order of Wasteland, and a group called the Desert Rangers actually appears in Fallout: New Vegas.

According to IGN, " Interplay's inability to prise the Wasteland brand name from EA's gnarled fingers actually lead to it creating Fallout in the first place.

Fargo subsequently co-designed Interplay's early RPGs, including the critically acclaimed Wasteland.
