Depictions of Vishnu are prominent at Angkor Wat, the 12th century temple that was originally dedicated to Vishnu.

As regards the historical legend of What Phra Kaew, it was originally known as the " Wat Pa Yia ", ( Bamboo Forest Monastery ) in the Chiang Rai province of Northern Thailand.

It was moved to this location in 1800 by King Chao Kawila ; it was originally located in Wat Sadeu Muang.

Those relics were originally acquired by Prince Pangkaraj of Yonok Nakpan, who divided them into three parts for the three temples of Wat Phra That Doi Tung, Wat Phra That Chomkitti, and Wat Phra That Doi Chom Thong, respectively.

The temple was originally called Wat Pa Yeah or Wat Pa Yah as it was surrounded by a dense yellow bamboo grove locally known as Yeah or Yah.

The image was originally housed at Wat Phra Chao Lan Thong in Chiang Rai, then moved to Wat Ngam Muang, and then to Wat Phra Kaew in 1961 ( B. E 2504 ).

The original name Wat Ku Kham means ' The temple of the Gold Chedi ' and the later name means ' Temple with Angular Chedi '.

A weather-worn and now nearly illegible marker erected by Thailand's Fine Arts department () for a Khmer chedi by Wat Sing Tha, related that during the Thonburi Era, grandson Thao Kham Su () called the settlement Ban Sing Thong ().

With walls nearly half a mile long on each side, Angkor Wat grandly portrays the Hindu cosmology, with the central towers representing Mount Meru, home of the gods ; the outer walls, the mountains enclosing the world ; and the moat, the oceans beyond.

Some have argued that the name was in fact a pseudonym for Wat Tyler or one of the other peasants ' leaders ; all of them appear to have used pseudonyms, adding to the confusion.

For example, five towers at the center of the Angkor Wat complex represent the peaks of Mount Meru, the center of the universe ; an outer wall represents the mountains that ring the world's edge ; and a moat depicts the cosmic ocean.
