The concept of jianghu can be traced to the 14th century novel Water Margin, in which a band of noble outlaws, who mounted regular sorties in an attempt to right the wrongs of corrupt officials, retreated to their hideout.

From at least the Yuan dynasty, plays that recounted the subversive tales of China's Robin Hoods to the Ming dynasty novels such as Water Margin, on down to the Qing dynasty novel Dream of the Red Chamber and beyond, there developed a literature in written vernacular Chinese ( 白話 / 白话 ; báihuà ).

Here, Mao was taught the value systems of Confucianism, one of the dominant moral ideologies in China, but he would later admit that he did not enjoy reading the classical Chinese texts which preached Confucian morals, instead favouring popular novels such as Romance of the Three Kingdoms and Water Margin.

During the Ming Dynasty ( 1368 – 1644 ), characters from popular novels such as the Water Margin were widely featured on the faces of playing cards.

The accounts are known through often inconsistent 19th-century secret society histories and popular literature, and also appear to draw on both Fujianese folklore and popular narratives such as the classical novel Water Margin.

In the Ming Dynasty, Luo Guanzhong and Shi Nai ' an wrote Romance of the Three Kingdoms and Water Margin respectively, which became two of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature.

Water Margin is often seen as the first full-length wuxia novel: the portrayal of the 108 heroes, and their code of honour and willingness to become outlaws rather than serve a corrupt government, played an influential role in the development of jianghu culture in later centuries.

By the age of eight, he was reading other traditional Chinese novels, including the Water Margin, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and Dream of the Red Mansion.

In 1975, Jiang initiated a campaign named " Criticizing Song Jiang, Evaluating the Water Margin ", which encouraged the use of Zhou as an example of a political loser.

Luo was attributed with writing Romance of the Three Kingdoms and editing Water Margin, two of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature.

The stories forming the bulk of Romance of the Three Kingdoms and Water Margin are thought to have been developed by many independent storytellers.

Shi Naian is thought to be the first to assemble Water Margin into a unified work, and Luo subsequently brought it to the current form of 100 chapters.

Water Margin is a novel based on the outlaw Song Jiang and his 36 companions.

A direct precursor of Water Margin was the Old incidents in the Xuanhe period of the great Song Dynasty ( 大宋宣和遺事 ), which appeared around the mid 13th century.

Some of the more well known stories and characters in Water Margin are clearly visible, including " Yang Zhi sells his precious saber ", " Robbing the convoy of birthday gifts ", " Song Jiang kills Yan Poxi ", " Fighting Fang La ", among others.

During this time, the material on which Water Margin was based evolved into what it is in the present.

There is a theory that Water Margin became popular during the Yuan era as the common people ( predominantly Han Chinese ) resented the Mongol rulers.

In Water Margin by Shi Naian, another of the Four Great Classical Novels, five of the 108 outlaws at Liangshan Marsh-Guan Sheng, Lin Chong, Qin Ming, Huyan Zhuo and Dong Ping-are called " Five Tiger Generals " of the Liangshan cavalry.

The original Game Boy and Game Boy Color versions have a Moon Water storyline, and are known as Bubble Bobble, and Classic Bubble Bobble respectively.
