The club play at The Valley in Charlton, where they have played since 1919, apart from one year in Catford, during 1923 – 24, and seven years at Crystal Palace and West Ham United between 1985 – 1992.

Charlton share local London derbies with Millwall, Crystal Palace ; and with east London club West Ham United.

Charlton finally secured promotion to the First Division by beating local rivals West Ham in front of 41, 254 fans at the Valley, with their valiant centre-half John Oakes playing on despite concussion and a broken nose.

In 1975, as a Second Division team, they contested the FA Cup final for the only time in their history, losing 2 – 0 to West Ham United.

Although the London County Council had been created as a London-wide authority covering the County of London in 1889, the county did not cover all the built-up area of London, particularly West Ham and East Ham ; and many of the LCC housing projects, including the vast Becontree Estate, were outside its boundaries.

At club level, Banks came up with his second most famous save when spectacularly palming a vicious penalty from his England team-mate Hurst over the crossbar as Stoke defeated West Ham United in the semi final of the 1972 League Cup.

In 1972, West Ham reached the semi final of the League Cup when they played Stoke City over two legs.

In the home leg for West Ham, they were awarded a penalty which Hurst took.

Hurst left West Ham to join them later the same year for £ 80, 000.

He had played 502 games for West Ham, during which time he had scored 249 goals in all competitions.

With captain Bobby Moore and young midfielder Martin Peters already in the side, it completed a trio of West Ham players selected by Ramsey at this most crucial stage of the competition.

Hurst continued to play and score for England, and although he won no further honours with West Ham or England in the 1960s he still maintained his England place for much of the period ; for the 2 – 3 seasons immediately after 1966 he was an internationally renowned striker and goalscorer.

On his final league appearance, he scored twice in a 3 – 1 home win over a West Ham side whose title hopes had just disappeared.

This, his maiden Test century in his fifth Test, was the turning point of the series as West Indies won the final two Tests to win the series 2 – 1. Lara went on to name his daughter Sydney after scoring 277 at SCG.

Later that season, under his captaincy, West Indies won the two match Test series against Sri Lanka 1 – 0 with Lara making a double century in the First Test.

In September 2004, West Indies won the ICC Champions Trophy in England under his captaincy.

After a one day series against South Africa, he scored his first Test century against the visiting Pakistanis in the first Test at Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados which the West Indies eventually won.

This followed the resignation of Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who had been captain for thirteen months – in which the West Indies won just one of the 14 Test matches they had competed.

Instead, the Rockies dropped even further, finishing 72 – 90 and in last place in the West as the Diamondbacks won the division in just their second year of existence.

The West Indies and India have won twice, while Pakistan and Sri Lanka have each won once.

The tournament was won by the West Indies, who defeated Australia by 17 runs in the final at Lord's.

The other five players were from West Germany's squad of 1966 – 1974, and this record is closely followed by a select group of players who have won two of the awards ( either Gold and Silver or Gold and Bronze, or Silver and Bronze ).

They won the West London Amateur Cup in 1887 and, having shortened the name from Fulham Excelsior to its present form in 1888, they then won the West London League in 1893 at the first attempt.

That said, England had won 2 – 1 and were in the final, where West Germany awaited.
