This branch of the Bland family first came to Virginia in 1654, when the father of Richard I, Theodorick Bland of Westover ( 1629 – 1671 ), emigrated from London and Spain, where he had been attending to the family mercantile and shipping enterprises.

Once settled in Virginia, where he purchased a tract of on the Appomattox River in 1689 / 90, he established a close friendship with William Byrd of Westover, an influential Virginia planter with botanical connections in London.

Byrd was a descendant of one of the First Families of Virginia ; his ancestors included William Byrd II of Westover Plantation, who established Richmond, and Pocahontas.

William Byrd II died on 26 August 1744 and was buried at Westover Plantation, Virginia, British America.

Like the other plantations along the James River, Westover was first devoted to the cultivation of tobacco, the major commodity of colonial Tidewater Virginia.
