Whetstone was the site of Frank Whittle's factory, where jet engines were developed.

It was first written in Algol 60 in 1972 at the National Physical Laboratory in the United Kingdom and derived from statistics on program behaviour gathered on the KDF9 computer, using a modified version of its Whetstone Algol 60 compiler.

The Whetstone benchmark originally measured computing power in units of kilo-Whetstone Instructions Per Second ( kWIPS ).

Totteridge and Whetstone station was planned by the Edgware, Highgate and London Railway ( EH & LR ) and was originally opened as Whetstone and Totteridge on 1 April 1872 by the Great Northern Railway ( which had taken over the EH & LR ).

It was originally in the county of Middlesex, and included parts of what is now Hampstead Garden Suburb and Whetstone.

Both Whetstone and Dhrystone are synthetic benchmarks, meaning that they are simple programs that are carefully designed to statistically mimic the processor usage of some common set of programs.

The original Algol 60 program has recently been run under the Whetstone compiler, for the first time since the last KDF9 was shut down in 1980, but now executed by a KDF9 emulator.

The name " Dhrystone " is a pun on a different benchmark algorithm called Whetstone.

The Dhrystone benchmark contains no floating point operations, thus the name is a pun on the then-popular Whetstone benchmark for floating point operations.

In the north of the borough on the eastern side is Barnet, also known as High Barnet or Chipping Barnet, Totteridge, and Whetstone.

It is thought that Whetstone was named after the whetstone used to sharpen knives and other tools, a chunk of which is located on the High Road, on the pavement outside the Griffin pub ( see picture ).

It was by instrumenting the latter that Brian Wichmann obtained the statistics on program behaviour that led him to devise the Whetstone benchmark for scientific computation, which inspired in turn the Dhrystone benchmark for non-numerical workloads.

It is on the northern side of Totteridge Lane ( A5109 ), somewhat to the east of the Dollis Brook ( the traditional boundary between Totteridge and Whetstone ) hence is in Whetstone.
