Mark Edward Whitacre ( born May 1, 1957 ) came to public attention in 1995 when, as president of the BioProducts Division at Archer Daniels Midland ( ADM ), he was the highest-level corporate executive in U. S. history to become a Federal Bureau of Investigation ( FBI ) whistleblower.

For three years ( 1992 – 1995 ), Whitacre acted as an informant for the FBI, which was investigating ADM for price fixing.

Whitacre was born on May 1, 1957 and grew up in Morrow, Ohio.

On August 9, 1995, Whitacre was terminated for conducting a $ 9. 5 million fraud after ADM learned that he was an FBI informant for three years, where Whitacre wore a wire for the FBI assisting in one of the largest price fixing cases in U. S. history against ADM.

After leaving ADM in August of 1995, Whitacre was hired as the CEO of Future Health Technologies ( FHT ), which soon thereafter FHT was renamed Biomar International, and he worked at Biomar until his incarceration began during early 1998.

In December 2006, after his release from federal prison, Whitacre was hired by Cypress Systems Inc., a California biotechnology company, as the President of Technology and Business Development.

In March 2008, Whitacre was promoted to the company's Chief Operating Officer ( COO ) and President of operations.

A few years into the price-fixing investigation, Whitacre confessed to his FBI handlers that he had been involved with corporate kickbacks and money laundering at ADM. Whitacre was later convicted of embezzling US $ 9 million ; some of this criminal activity occurred during the time he was cooperating with the FBI.

Represented by high profile lawyer, John M. Dowd, Whitacre pleaded guilty, without a trial, to tax evasion and fraud and was sent to prison on March 4, 1998.

Although some officials in the FBI and the Department of Justice opposed the length of the penalty, Whitacre was sentenced to ten and a half years in Federal prison — three times longer than his price-fixing conspirators.

In his 2000 book, The Informant, Kurt Eichenwald, a former New York Times reporter, portrays Whitacre as a complex figure: while working for the FBI as one of the best and most effective undercover cooperating witnesses the U. S. government ever had, Whitacre was simultaneously committing a US $ 9 million white-collar crime.

According to Eichenwald, preceding the investigation Whitacre was scammed by a group in Nigeria in an advance fee fraud, and suggests that Whitacre's losses in the scam may have been the initial reason behind his embezzlement activity at ADM.

Lieber reveals that, in 1996, " ADM CEO, Mr. Dwayne Andreas, told The Washington Post that he had known about Whitacre's frauds for three years ” and speculates that Whitacre was fired and turned over to the Federal authorities only after ADM learned he had been working as an FBI mole.

Lieber also poses this question: " Where will the government obtain the next Mark Whitacre after potential whistleblowers observe how Whitacre was treated?

Paisley concluded that " Whitacre's fraud case was minuscule as compared to the ADM case Whitacre cooperated with .” " Had it not been for the fraud conviction ," Paisley said, " he would be a national hero.

On July 23, GM announced its new Board of Directors: Dan Akerson, David Bonderman, Robert D. Krebs, Patricia F. Russo and Ed Whitacre ( GM Chairman and Interim Chief Executive Officer ).

As part of the company's advertising, Ed Whitacre announced the company's 60-day money-back guarantee and repayment of $ 6. 7 billion loan from government ahead of schedule.

On August 12, 2010 GM announced that Whitacre would relinquish the CEO position effective September 1, 2010 and that of Chairman of the Board at the end of the year, to be replaced in those functions by current board member Dan Akerson.

On January 6, 2010, GM CEO Ed Whitacre said he hopes to close the deal with Tengzhong by the end of January 2010.

In apparent retaliation for his role as an informant, ADM investigated Whitacre's activities and, upon discovering suspicious activity, requested the FBI investigate Whitacre for embezzlement.

As a result of US $ 9. 5 million in various frauds, Whitacre lost his whistleblower's immunity, and consequently spent eight-and-a-half years in federal prison.

Whitacre is currently the chief operating officer and President of Operations at Cypress Systems, a California biotechnology firm.

In late 1989, Whitacre became the President of the BioProducts Division at ADM.

Forbes reported that Whitacre was guest speaker at the Quantico FBI Academy during 2011 about second chances., and he was keynote speaker for the 40th Annual NAPSA ( Pre Trial Services and U. S. Federal Probation ) Conference in 2012 along with Robert F Kennedy, Jr.

The line had originally enabled passengers from the DerbyTamworth, Kingsbury, Whitacre, Shustoke and Coleshill areas to make connections at Hampton for other parts of the country, because at one time the Midland Railway and the London and North Western Railway had stations side by side at Hampton, at the point where the two lines met ( called Derby Junction ).

Sacco accepted the position of Dean of the Edward E. Whitacre Jr. College of Engineering at Texas Tech University, effective January 1, 2011.

On April 27, 2007, at the AT & T annual stockholders meeting, Whitacre announced his intent to retire as chief executive officer and chairman of the board, effective June 3.

It has been reported that during his tenure at AT & T, Whitacre offered Randall Stephenson three words of advice via text message when the executive change was announced: " Give ' em hell ".

BusinessWeek ( 1999 ) reported that, although the CEO of AT & T-amongst the largest and most influential names in telecommunications and its surrounding technology, Whitacre did not use e-mail or have a computer at his office.

As General Motors chairman and interim CEO, Whitacre does have a computer at his office and prefers to answer e-mail via BlackBerry.

AT & T headquarters in downtown Dallas was dubbed " Whitacre Tower " in honor of Whitacre's 44 years at the company, 17 of which were spent as chairman and CEO.

The bill envisaged the line as running through Whitacre to meet the London and Birmingham Railway with a junction at Stechford to travel into the latter's terminus at Curzon Street.

In 2008, more than ten years after the original conviction, Paisley and two other FBI agents went public with praise for Whitacre.

Opened as a double-track main line on August 12, 1839, the section from Whitacre to Hampton, known as the Stonebridge Railway, was downgraded to a branch line in 1842 after the opening of the line from Whitacre into Birmingham ; it was singled in 1843 and lost its final passenger service in 1917 as a wartime economy measure.

In January 2010, chairman Whitacre was appointed permanent CEO after serving in the post in an interim capacity.

Two doctors later diagnosed Whitacre as suffering from bipolar disorder.

In the movie, the character of Whitacre is portrayed as illustrating bizarre behavior, such as often being delusional, manic, compulsively lying, and was eventually learned that Whitacre was suffering from bipolar disorder.

On November 12, 2008, following a $ 25 million gift from AT & T in honor of alumnus Edward E. Whitacre, Jr, the college was formally renamed the Edward E. Whitacre, Jr. College of Engineering.

* the two North Warwickshire borough wards of Arley & Whitacre, and Hartshill were gained from the North Warwickshire constituency.

The first one was from Birmingham to Derby via Water Orton, Coleshill, Whitacre Heath and Tamworth.

* The line from Whitacre junction to Nuneaton was built by the Midland Railway, and opened in 1864.

Upon retirement, Whitacre was eligible for a $ 158 million payout from AT & T.

Following retirement, under his employment contract, Whitacre was entitled to receive some continuing benefits, including automobile use, access to AT & T's corporate aircraft for up to ten hours per month, use of AT & T office facilities and support staff, home security, and club memberships, as well as payment of applicable taxes resulting from these benefits, except for use of the aircraft.

It would also run from Whitacre to Hampton-in-Arden, where it would join the L & B for connections to London.

The line from Whitacre to Stechford which had not been built, was abandoned, and that to Hampton was reduced to single track.

The carnival starts with a procession of floats ( usually 5 or 6 ) leaving the Deighton Centre from approximately 1pm, playing Reggae Dancehall, Bassline, RnB, Garage and Reggae on the road, costumed bands make up more of the procession including Suga Brown dance group, " Whitacre TRA " and also from Bradley Junior and Infant and Ashbrow Junior and Infant schools.
