Flight is a mixture of a slow, deep flapping and short glides: unlike their European namesakes, White-winged Choughs are not particularly strong or agile fliers and spend the great majority of their time on the ground, foraging methodically through leaf litter for worms, insects, grain, and snails in a loose group, walking with a distinctive swagger, and calling softly to one another every few seconds.

There is one report of White-winged Choughs occupying and using a nest which was likely to have been built by the Australian Magpie.

These helpers are important in breeding success, so much so that White-winged Choughs have been reported to kidnap nearly fledged chicks from other groups in order to increase the size of the kidnapping group.

The You Yangs are home to more than 200 bird species such as White-naped, White-plumed, New Holland and Brown-capped Honeyeaters, Kookaburras, White-winged Choughs, Crested Shrike-tits, Purple-crowned Lorikeets, Eastern Yellow Robins, and Scarlet Robins, as well as Eastern Grey Kangaroos, Sugar Gliders, Brushtail and Ringtail Possums and Koalas.

Rare yellow box open woodlands with kangaroo grass understorey to the east help protect the resident kangaroos and the breeding White-winged Choughs.

Lac de Guiers is designated an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International ; the key species are Lesser Flamingo Phoeniconaias minor, Glossy Ibis Plegadis falcinellus, Eurasian Spoonbill Platalea leucorodia, African Spoonbill Platalea alba, White-winged Tern Chlidonias leucopterus and River Prinia Prinia fluviatilis.

The only species that are quite similar are the Syrian Woodpecker ( D. syriacus ) and the White-winged Woodpecker ( D. leucopterus ).

Differences from Syrian and White-winged Woodpeckers are the same as for adults.

White-winged Swallows are easily distinguished from the related Tree Swallow, which has occurred within its range, by the white in the wings ; this is lacking in the otherwise quite similar Tree Swallows.

Examples include forest butterflies, birds such as the cholo alethe and White-winged Apalis, a dwarf chameleon, geckos, skinks, the Squeaker Frog, and a rare limbless burrowing skink species.

Woodland birds include the European Green Woodpecker and the rare White-backed Woodpecker, cliffs harbour the Red-billed Chough and Alpine Chough and bare mountain birds include the Rock Partridge and White-winged Snowfinch.

Another endangered bird of the coast is the Whooping Crane ( Grus americana ) while other birds include Least Grebe, White-collared Seedeater ( Sporophila morelleti ), Red-billed Pigeon ( Columba flavirostris ), Brown Jay ( Cyanocorax morio ), Neotropic Cormorant, White-winged Dove ( Leptotila verrequxi ) and Audubon's Oriole ( Icterus graduacauda ).

The name ' White-winged Tern ' is the standard in most English-speaking countries ; in Britain, this name is also the one used by the formal ornithological recording authorities, but the older alternative ' White-winged Black Tern ' is still frequent in popular use.
