In 1927, Vickers merged with the Tyneside based engineering company Armstrong Whitworth, founded by W. G. Armstrong, to become Vickers-Armstrongs, Ltd. Armstrong Whitworth had developed along similar lines to Vickers, expanding into various military sectors and was notable for their artillery manufacture at Elswick and shipbuilding at a yard at High Walker on the River Tyne.

Whitworth was born in Stockport, the son of Charles Whitworth, a teacher and Congregational minister, and at an early age developed an interest in machinery.

However, just when it looked as if the new gun was about to become a great success, a great deal of opposition to the gun arose, both inside the army and from rival arms manufacturers, particularly Joseph Whitworth of Manchester.

Other great houses once lay within the district, including Clayton Hall ( owned by the Greaves family ), Whitworth Hall and Hulme Hall.

The first survey for an Andover Canal was carried out in 1770 by Robert Whitworth, at a time when there was a great deal of canal building activity in the country.

As a statesman, Malmesbury had an influence among his contemporaries which is scarcely to be understood from his writings, but which must have owed much to personal charm of manner and persuasiveness of tongue ; as a diplomatist, he seems to have deserved his reputation, and shares with Macartney, Auckland and Whitworth the credit of raising diplomacy from a profession in which only great nobles won the prizes to a career opening the path of honour to ability.

Although the Dadfords left the canal under a shadow, their work was vindicated by Whitworth, and they went on to build other canals in neighbouring valleys, while their achievement was summed up by John Bird in 1796: " The canal is brought through mountainous scenery with wonderful ingenuity "

It replaced its elderly Bristol Fighters with new Armstrong Whitworth Atlas aircraft, which were purpose designed for the squadron's Army co-operation role, in October 1929, while these in turn were replaced by Hawker Audaxes in December 1931.

Everybody has read Mr. Darwin's book, or, at least, has given an opinion upon its merits or demerits ; pietists, whether lay or ecclesiastic, decry it with the mild railing which sounds so charitable ; bigots denounce it with ignorant invective ; old ladies of both sexes consider it a decidedly dangerous book, and even savants, who have no better mud to throw, quote antiquated writers to show that its author is no better than an ape himself ; while every philosophical thinker hails it as a veritable Whitworth gun in the armoury of liberalism ; and all competent naturalists and physiologists, whatever their opinions as to the ultimate fate of the doctrines put forth, acknowledge that the work in which they are embodied is a solid contribution to knowledge and inaugurates a new epoch in natural history.

One was in Whitworth Street West on the corner of Oxford Street, while the other was on Oxford Road in Chorlton-on-Medlock.

The term " Darwinism " was first put in print by Huxley in his review of The Origin, in the April 1860 issue of the Westminster Review, which hailed the book as " a veritable Whitworth gun in the armoury of liberalism ", promoting scientific naturalism over theology and praising the usefulness of Darwin's ideas while expressing professional reservations about Darwin's gradualism and doubting if it could be proved that natural selection could form new species.

Josiah Clowes, and engineer who had previous experience of working on the Chester Canal and who had worked with Whitworth on the Thames and Severn Canal, was to be the engineer.

The lessons Maudslay learned about the need for stability and precision he adapted to the development of machine tools, and in his workshops he trained a generation of men to build on his work, such as Richard Roberts, Joseph Clement and Joseph Whitworth.

* Sizes for screws, nuts bolts and other threaded fasteners were first standardized based on work of by Joseph Whitworth.

The Whitworth rifle was never adopted by the government, although it was used extensively for match purposes and target practice between 1857 and 1866, when it was gradually superseded by Metford's.

In 1841, he devised the British Standard Whitworth system, which created an accepted standard for screw threads.

Upon his death in 1887, he bequeathed much of his fortune for the people of Manchester, with the Whitworth Art Gallery and Christie Hospital partly funded by Whitworth's money.

Whitworth also worked for Holtzapffel & Co ( makers of ornamental lathes ) and Joseph Clement.

In 1850, architect Edward Walters was commissioned to build The Firs for Whitworth.

In 1841 Whitworth devised a standard for screw threads with a fixed thread angle of 55 ° and having a standard pitch for a given diameter.

Whitworth was commissioned by the War Department of the British government to design a replacement for the calibre. 577-inch Pattern 1853 Enfield, whose shortcomings had been revealed during the recent Crimean War.

While trying to increase the bursting strength of his gun barrels, Whitworth patented a process called " fluid-compressed steel " for casting steel under pressure, and built a new steel works near Manchester.

Whitworth received many awards for the excellence of his designs and was financially very successful.

In 1868, he founded the Whitworth Scholarship for the advancement of mechanical engineering.

The theatre was named in honour of Geoffrey Whitworth who played a key part in developing a British tradition of amateur drama and in building political support for The Royal National Theatre erected at Waterloo, London after his death.

Imperial Airways used the Handley Page HP42 / HP45 four-engined biplanes from Croydon, as well as the Armstrong Whitworth Atlanta, which was the first monoplane airliner used by the airline, intended for use on the African routes.

Founded in 1886 by the Whitworth family, they are still run by the firm today, producing fine flours for the bakery trade.

A plan for the canal was published by Robert Whitworth Snr.

William Whitworth was resident engineer during this period and, upon Robert's departure, he became engineer until the canal's completion, for which he was paid £ 255, 262.

The culture of toolroom accuracy and precision, which started with interchangeability pioneers including Gribeauval, Tousard, North, Hall, Whitney, and Colt, and continued through leaders such as Maudslay, Palmer, Whitworth, Brown, Sharpe, Pratt, Whitney, Leland, and others, grew during the Machine Age to become an important part of combining applied science with technology.

Others, such as Henry Maudslay, James Nasmyth, and Joseph Whitworth, soon followed the path of expanding their entrepreneurship from manufactured end products and millwright work into the realm of building machine tools for sale.

Mechanical engineer and tool-maker Henry Maudslay was an early member and Joseph Whitworth presented one of the earliest papers – it was not until 1847 that the Institution of Mechanical Engineers was established ( with George Stephenson as its first President ).
