Willem Barentsz (, anglicized as William Barents or Barentz ) ( c. 1550 – 20 June 1597 ) was a Dutch navigator, cartographer, explorer, and a leader of early expeditions to the far north.

The Dutch navigator Willem Barentsz was born on Terschelling around 1550.

Svalbard was undoubtedly spotted by Willem Barentsz in 1596, although it may have previously have been discovered by Pomors or Norsemen.

The first to undisputed have discovered the archipelago is an expedition led by the Dutch mariner Willem Barentsz, who was looking for the Northern Sea Route to China.

The most notable was the 1596 expedition led by Dutch navigator Willem Barentsz, who discovered Spitsbergen and Bear Island and rounded the north of Novaya Zemlya.

Without an official curator, the painting collection was only available to be seen by appointment with the city clerk, a situation that has remained up to the present day for the large pieces still located there, such as the whalebone from Willem Barentsz trip to Nova Zembla or the portrait of Kenau Simonsdochter Hasselaer.

Rijp is best known for his involvement with the Dutch explorer Willem Barentsz in finding a route to the East, avoiding the Spanish and the Portuguese navy in the South.

The first person to record the phenomenon was Gerrit de Veer, a member of Willem Barentsz ' ill-fated third expedition into the polar region.

In June 1594, Linschoten sailed from Texel in the expedition headed by Dutch cartographer Willem Barentsz.

Among its founding fathers was Willem Usselincx ( 1567 – 1647 ).

W. de Klerk, was the seventh and last State President of apartheid-era South Africa, serving from September 1989 to May 1994. de Klerk was also leader of the National Party ( which later became the New National Party ) from February 1989 to September 1997.

Andriessen was born in Utrecht into a musical family, the son of the composer Hendrik Andriessen ( 1892 – 1981 ), brother of composers Jurriaan Andriessen ( 1925 – 1996 ) and Caecilia Andriessen ( 1931 -), and nephew of Willem Andriessen ( 1887 – 1964 ).

The term was coined by the Dutch psychiatrist and writer Frederik ( Willem ) van Eeden ( 1860 – 1932 ).

The first documented European sighting of the region was made by the Dutch Captain Willem de Vlamingh and his crew on 10 January 1697.

In May 1645 he was selected by the Dutch West India Company to replace Willem Kieft as Director-General of the New Netherland colony.

The word doesn't appear unhyphenated until about 1934 by Willem de Sitter, perhaps indicating that up to that point its German equivalent, Rotverschiebung, was more commonly used.

The first uncontested landing in Australia by Europeans was by Dutch navigator Willem Janszoon in 1606.

The island of Tortola was eventually sold to Willem Hunthum at some point in the 1650s, at which time the Dutch West India Company's interest in the Territory effectively ended.

He befriended fellow students Bart Bok and Pieter Oosterhoff and was taught by Ejnar Hertzsprung, Antonie Pannekoek, Willem de Sitter, Jan Woltjer, Jan Oort and the physicist Paul Ehrenfest.
