Wills formed several bands and played radio stations around the South and West until he formed the Texas Playboys in 1934 with Wills on fiddle, Tommy Duncan on piano and vocals, rhythm guitarist June Whalin, tenor banjoist Johnnie Lee Wills, and Kermit Whalin, who played steel guitar and bass.

Wills remained with the Doughboys and replaced Brown with new singer Tommy Duncan in 1932.

In 1945 Wills ' dances were outdrawing those of Tommy Dorsey and Benny Goodman, and he had moved to Fresno, California.

Still a binge drinker, Wills became increasingly unreliable in the late 1940s, causing a rift with Tommy Duncan ( who bore the brunt of audience anger when Wills's binges prevented him from appearing ).

This is where Bob Wills, Leon McAuliffe, and Tommy Duncan first started playing music together.

Bob Wills, the King of Western Swing, was also influenced by Miller ( see the sound file above with Will's singer Tommy Duncan singing " Blue Yodel No. 1 " in 1937 ) In the early 1920s African American Winston Holmes started a record label, Merritt Records, and was a performer himself.

Tommy Duncan, vocalist for " Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys ", was a good yodeler.

In addition to launching Western swing pioneers Bob Wills and Milton Brown, it provided a platform for many of the best musicians of the genre, including Tommy Duncan, Cecil Brower, John " Knocky " Parker and Kenneth Pitts.

To capitalize on the pioneering success of the Bob Wills – Tommy Duncan pairing, Cooley hired vocalist Tex Williams who was capable of the mellow deep baritone sound made popular by Duncan.

" Wills and Duncan left the Doughboys in 1933 after Wills had missed one show too many due to his sporadic drinking.

In October 1933, Wills was fired and a new group of Doughboys went to Chicago for a recording session with Vocalion ( later Columbia ) Records.
